Live This Month: September 2014 — an audio guide to upcoming SF concerts

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/LTM_September_2014.mp3 Download: Live This Month: September 2014 (Podcast #345) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. If you dig back-to-basics noise pop -- the kind of indie rock that's propelled by great hooks, not trends and hype -- you're in luck this month. Scottish trio PAWS just released Youth Culture Forever, and the band's tight songs are matched by a live ferocity. Another trio crafting explosive, 90s-influenced rock is Slothrust; the Brooklyn band's Of Course You Do arrived earlier this year. As [...]

PAWS release new album, support We Are Scientists at The Independent tonight

Glasgow pop-punk trio PAWS have just released their sophomore album Youth Culture Forever yesterday, May 6, via FatCat Records. The boys are currently touring with We Are Scientists, and will open for the New York-via-Berkeley dance-rock duo at The Independent tonight. The Bay Bridged's own Roman Gokhman recently caught up with We Are Scientists to discuss their new album and latest sci-fi adventures. PAWS is guitarist Philip Taylor, bassist Ryan Drever, and drummer Josh Swinney. If you missed their wild San Francisco debut at last November's Professional Fans curated showcase at Cafe Du Nord, tonight's double bill is a great [...]

In the background PAWS continues the '90s slacker revivalism with heart-on-sleeve lyrics: "Do you think that we could have tried a little harder/I know that I should have tried a little harder.../sometimes we were forced to accept defeat." They'll be causing havoc with We [...]

Editors’ Picks: What We’ve Been Listening to This Week: PAWS, Owls, Fronds

Anna: I am so incredibly behind on everything. I finally got around to listening to Jonah Raydio after the podcast had already been around for a year. In one of the first episodes, he played "Jellyfish" by PAWS, and I became obsessed with Cokefloat!, on which "Jellyfish" resides. I then realized that this album has been out since October 2012. Well, better late than never. This album is totally addictive and thrilling - a rollicking throwback to the 90s. I adore it.   Nicole: Midwest emo fans everywhere cheered in unison on Monday when Owls shared their first [...]

Mixtape: Fifteen Highlights from South by Southwest 2013 (Podcast #302)

Mixtape: Fifteen Highlights from South by Southwest 2013 (Podcast #302) As discussed earlier today, we saw a ton of great bands at South by Southwest 2013. Here are fifteen SXSW discoveries from a number of genres. As you'll see, the first half of the mix (Side A, if you will) includes some of our favorite rock, punk and psych highlights from SXSW. The second half, by contrast, is all about electronic pop. We'd previously covered a few of these acts before, but we'll be watching all of them closely in the future. For more about these bands and all of [...]
