Giveaway: PAPA to play Santa Cruz, The Chapel tonight and tomorrow

Los Angeles based band PAPA kicks off an 11-date West Coast tour with a show tonight in Santa Cruz and tomorrow at The Chapel. 2016 has been a big year for PAPA. Not only have they recently released their sophomore effort Kick At The Dust earlier this month, but spent a large portion of the year as the hand-picked support for Florence and the Machine's US tour. After wrapping up a summer residency of free shows at LA's Bootleg Theater in September, PAPA released the latest video from their new album called Comfort's A Killer. It's a short, high-energy one-two punch that takes [...]

PAPA returns with a middle finger salute to alt-radio

Los Angeles duo PAPA is exasperated with the current state of alternative rock radio. “It sounds like it’s written by a producer and heavily sampled,” frontman/drummer Darren Weiss says from home. Two weeks prior, PAPA released their first new music since 2013, “Hold On,” a middle finger to the current music landscape. Now the band, which includes bassist Danny Presant, is preparing for a short West Coast tour, which begins December 1 at The Chapel. To Weiss, formerly of Girls and Dawes, most current alternative music is really pop in disguise, written by people who are hoping it will crossover [...]

Interview: PAPA talks 'Tender Madness' and their return to the Bay

PAPA's straightforward, big-boned sound is as patriotic as rock gets. New release Tender Madness (which dropped November 4 via Island) is a booming array of Americana gusto and reverent idolatry for all those values that make this great nation worth its salt—lust, youth and the relentless pursuit of a roaring good time. You might recognize PAPA's drummer/vocalist Darren Weiss from San Francisco's own Girls, the now defunct act fronted by the enigmatic Christopher Owens. Girls may have met an early demise, but Weiss' side-project-turned-main-jam took off after a fermentation period in New York before moving back to Los Angeles. PAPA will [...]

Live This Month: November 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #318)

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/LTM_November_2013.mp3 Download: Live This Month: November 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #318) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. For some reason, November's concert offerings include a ton of exciting reunions, returns and anniversaries. This mix includes new music from Medicine, the shoegaze vets who are now touring behind their first album in 18 years, post-punk luminaries Wire, whose Change Becomes Us finds the band fleshing out ideas first generated three decades ago, and The Sonics. [...]

Wires on Fire (PAPA, GIRLS, Queens of the Stone Age) return with new tracks

In 2004, Wires on Fire formed in Los Angeles -- and released an EP, an LP, and then pretty much fell off the map. Brothers Darren and Evan Weiss went on to play in GIRLS and PAPA, while bassist Michael Shuman joined Queens of the Stone Age. Fast forward to today, when Wires on Fire released the first two songs since their hiatus: "Up Your Sleeve" and "Born Dirty to Last Forever," both available as free downloads. The tracks definitely reflect the band's original inspirations of Drive Like Jehu and The Jesus Lizard: riffy, fast and fun. We hope to [...]

Interview: PAPA singer-drummer shuts window to one band, opens door to another

Even before the future of critically praised San Francisco indie-rock band Girls was thrown into uncertainty, when singer Christopher Owens quit last month, drummer Darren Weiss knew that his side-project PAPA was more important to him. Following a year of touring and recording with both Girls and PAPA, an indie-rock and soul project with bassist Danny Presant, he decided in January that he could not continue at his current pace and stay healthy. “There just came a point where I had to go one way or the other,” the Los Angeles drummer-vocalist said. “I decided early on that, as much [...]
