Outside Lands is back for 2021…but is it too early?

Outside Lands is back for 2021 but is it too early? Our writer Ashley Bulayo has some thoughts about this year's Outside Lands, the first major Bay Area fest to return after live music's COVID-induced freeze. It was the music announcement heard all around the Bay Area: Outside Lands is back for 2021. It's bringing all its glory back to Golden Gate Park during Halloween weekend (October 29 - 31, 2021). Hey Bay Area, let's chat. I, along with so many of you, miss concerts just as much as the next person. I lived and breathed live events. [...]

Photos: Outside Lands 2019 graces Golden Gate Park for a 12th year of great music

(photo: Daniel Kielman) Another Outside Lands Music Festival has left San Francisco's beloved Golden Gate Park, continuing to be one of the most reliable festivals for variety and quality in entertainment. It set a precedent as being the first major US festival to offer on-site cannabis consumption, adding more to the variety of ways to enjoy your music over the three-day weekend. The weather was sunny most of it, which allowed for the great shots that we captured below. As usual, it was a lineup with a acts for everyone to enjoy, and seems to always be expanding. Below you can see [...]

Outside Lands 2019: A solid year that smashed attendance records

Kacey Musgraves at Outside Lands 2019 (all photos: Daniel Kielman) For a full photo gallery of the festival, click here. DAY ONE Friday at Outside Lands is never off to a particularly fast start, but this year it felt like there were less “must see” artists and more “might as well” artists. Some locals got the early birds warmed up, wth Rainbow Girls on the Panhandle stage and the Seshen on Sutro. Both stopped to make statements on the current climate during their sets, remarking on the need for love and togetherness. For all the fear and loathing around being [...]

Review: A numbered list of highlights from this year’s Outside Lands

Outside Lands Music Festival 2018 (photo: Jon Bauer) It’s that time of year again. Outside Lands has come and gone. Everyone has washed the dust off their faces and returned to work or school or whatever it is they do. Many memories were made this weekend, be it the Bill Murray sign on a stick that you used to keep your group together, or you finally getting to cry to Bon Iver live. We did it, and we survived. I hope everyone had a safe and fun experience (and that you put on enough sunscreen). I spent much of the weekend [...]

Good or bad? Clear bags now required at festivals

(A Clusterfest attendee sporting a clear bag. Photo: Ashley Bulayo) It’s officially happening. Clear bags are now a must when it comes to attending festivals. That is, they were if you attended this year’s Clusterfest and/or are planning on attending Outside Lands. The organizer of both events, Superfly, went ahead and greenlit the controversial “clear bag policy” for both events. Say goodbye to your Jansport — now, just like when you go to football games, you will only be allowed entry with one of the following: a clear plastic, clear vinyl, or clear PVC bag that does not exceed 20” [...]

Outside Lands 2018: The Weeknd, Florence + The Machine, Janet Jackson top this year’s lineup

Outside Lands is coming back to to Golden Gate Park on August 10-12, and the beloved local festival just announced a doozy of a lineup for its 11th year! In addition to the expected mix of big name festival veterans (CHVRCHES, Bon Iver, Father John Misty) and emerging artists (Cuco, Lucy Dacus, Daniel Caesar), Outside Lands 2018 stands out with two welcome developments. First, it's great to see women headlining two of the festival's three days, as Florence + The Machine and Janet Jackson join the Weeknd atop this year's poster. Second, there's a strong contingent of Bay Area performers [...]

Mixtape: Northern California’s Best Music Festivals

This episode first appeared on KQED.org. http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/Festivals_2017_Mixtape.mp3 Download: Mixtape: Northern California's Best Music Festivals (Podcast #407) Music festival season unofficially kicked off over Memorial Day weekend, with the latest installment of the BottleRock Napa Valley festival attracting 120,000 attendees for three days of food, wine, and over 80 bands ranging from the Foo Fighters to the Napa Youth Symphony. The number and types of music fests has grown considerably in recent years -- among this year's new offerings are not one, but two new music and comedy weekends coming to the Bay in June -- surely to the dismay of [...]

Best of 2016: Paige’s favorite crowd photos

Crowd at Twenty One Pilots (By: Paige K. Parsons) Editor's note: Photographer Paige K. Parsons takes not only great shots of bands but plenty of the fans at the shows she covers. The intensity and passion of a band's fans can sometimes say just as much about the band. The Bay Area music scene is fortunate to have some of the most devoted and animated music fans this side of the country, and Paige's selection of 16 photos from some of her favorite shots of fans from this year all speak for themselves.
