Festival season has begun! In this mix, we've included songs from artists performing at an eclectic set of fests around Northern California, including the Huichica Music Festival, Deathstock II, Burger Boogaloo, and Asian Man Records' 20th anniversary celebration. June is also a big month for new albums from local bands, and we've got some great new songs in this mix from Night School, Whiskerman, Young Moon, [...]
Cloakroom, Nothing, Tony Molina to play Oakland Metro next week
Next week, the East Bay will be blessed with a rare appearance from Indiana's Cloakroom, a trio whose dense, stony emo turned heads with this year's Further Out. I can't deny it, I seriously love this band. From the baritone, Morrissey-esque vocals to the massive drumming - just listen to the single “Starchild Skull” for a full dose of their fresh slow-core. They'll be making their way out here with Philadelphia's Nothing, who play a brand of shoegaze that hints at its creators hardcore punk pasts; a type of vicious, dreamy grunge, who's bite is occasionally lost in cascades of reverb. Joining the [...]
Whirr and Nothing release joint EP
Whirr (Art: Pascal Hauer) Whirr has a way of creating an atmosphere out of their music. It's a soundscape, dense and ambient, almost like an overwhelming dream. The San Francisco-born band is prolific too, releasing music composed by members who have had a hand in bands like Deafheaven and who moonlight in side projects like Death for Lovers and Camera Shy. However, it's probably their collaborating work with Nothing that seems the most flawlessly orchestrated. Following the bands' joint touring, it seems only natural that they'd release a joint EP—and that's how the split 12" was born. And it works well together, of course. [...]

Nothing happens at Bottom of the Hill on Sunday
Fans of fuzz will want to check out Nothing (yep, that's their name), all the way in from Philadelphia and playing this Sunday at Bottom of the Hill. A bitter blast of rock 'n' roll that toes the line between mopey shoegaze and no-holds-barred shreddage, Nothing are reminiscent of the Pacific Northwest in the '90s, but still right at home among today's garage greats. So yeah, check 'em out at Bottom of the Hill this Sunday. It will probably be pretty loud. Watch the video for "Bent Nail" below, and be on the lookout for a cameo from fellow Philadelphian [...]
Live This Month: May 2014 — an audio guide to upcoming SF concerts
http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/LTM_May_2014.mp3 Download: Live This Month: May 2014 — an audio guide to upcoming SF concerts (Podcast #336) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. It's a big month for local bands Doe Eye and Papercuts, both of whom have record release shows for exciting new albums. Doe Eye's Television is the first LP from Maryam Qudus and her band, and, on first listen, it's a real winner. Embellishing Qudus' singer-songwriter pop with impressive studio inventiveness, there's a feeling of liberated creativity to [...]
Nothing announces SF show and new video for “Bent Nail”
Photo by Shawn Brackbill Philadelphia's Nothing has already released their debut record, Guilty of Everything, via Relapse Records, and now they've premiered the video for single "Bent Nail" via A.V. Club. The shoegaze quartet is embarking on a tour with the likes of Pelican and Superheaven, but will hit San Francisco with local favorites Whirr and Angelenos Youth Code next month. Though band founder Domenic Palermo has already had his share of guilty time during his stint in a band called Horror Show, he has since changed his ways and teamed up with Brandon Setta to achieve the new record's "lush" sounds. Nothing has been [...]
Review & Photos: Whirr, Nothing, Lycus @ Bottom of the Hill, 8/28/13
Nothing (Photo: Nicole L. Browner) Whirr and Nothing's month-long tour of North America swung through town on Wednesday night, bringing a singular, serene shot of shoegaze noise to the hallowed halls of Bottom of the Hill. Despite hailing from Oakland and Philly, respectively, the two acts have apparently become quite chummy since they kicked things off in Phoenix at the end of July -- Nothing frontman Dominic Palermo joined Whirr onstage to provide vocals on one track and, for the night's best trick, the bands actually linked their two sets together with a cloud of feedback and distortion. [...]
Whirr playing last Bay Area show of 2013 at Bottom of the Hill tonight
A few years ago, The Bay Bridged did a survey of local shoegaze bands -- and one of those acts that has been particularly quiet, though making sweeping moves with their latest EP Around, is Whirr. They're playing tonight at Bottom of the Hill with Nothing and Lycus, and we wanted to take a closer look at the mysterious and constantly evolving shoegaze outfit's approach to Around, released in July by Graveface Records. The four-song collection is rich in reverb, massively slow, and despite how heavy the guitars ring out, it's also somewhat delicate to the ear. Guitarist Nick Bassett [...]
Live This Month: August 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #311)
Live This Month: August 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #311) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. You can't talk about Bay Area concerts in August without acknowledging the biggest of them all, the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, which returns to Golden Gate Park from August 9-11. The festival is sold out, and with good reason: the lineup offers everything from Paul McCartney and Nine Inch Nails to King Tuff and local bands like [...]
