Chain and the Gang, The Strange Boys, Ty Segall, Nodzzz @ Elbo Room, 2/27

Review and Photos by MikeyMike The Elbo Room brought out quite a lineup this past Saturday with local heroes Nodzzz and Ty Segall plus imports The Strange Boys (Austin, Texas), and Chain and the Gang (D.C.). Although this took place during Noise Pop, this was definitely not Noise Pop. Gone were the young ladies doling out Noise Pop propaganda, gone were the banners of hip kids sucking soda pop with straws. Instead, there was a tense mayhem in the air. The packed room revealed none of the usual findings -- heads bobbing in place, space-sensitive moshing -- replaced by shouts [...]

Best of 2009: Dan Strachota on Nodzzz

My favorite local disc of 2009 actually came out in late November 2008. But that's not the most annoying thing about Nodzzz's self-titled mini-LP. Rather, it's that you can't put any of the tracks on a mix-CD, since it's only available on 12-inch vinyl. Nodzzz - "In the City (Contact High)" But with songs as great as "Controlled Karaoke," "I Can't Wait," and "In the City (Contact High)," Nodzzz can be forgiven. Besides, when was the last time a band sounded like so many other bands while still seeming totally new? Slanted and Enchanted, maybe. I hear the [...]

Nodzzz, Younger Lovers @ Sub-Mission Art Space 8/12

The five-day fest starts tonight with Nodzzz, Younger Lovers, Rank/Xerox, Robocop 3, Fugitive Kind, Celine Dion, Awesomes, and Year One at Sub-Mission Gallery (formerly Balazo Gallery). That's a lot of bands in one night for a great price. Nodzzz - "I Can't Wait" 7pm-11pm. [...]

Yard show runaround: Brilliant Colors, NODZZZ, Grass Widow

Photos by: Rachel Keenan My friend calls me up just before noon on Saturday and says there's some show down the street in someone or other's yard in a few hours. Turns out to be a cluster of three kick ass garage pop bands tucked behind a turn of the century house on Folsom in the inner Mission, a swath of Ray Bans overlooking the deck, and a bunch of smiley neighborhood rock kids drinking Red Stripe in cans. Just about saved the day from an earlier excursion to Dolores Park, where a proselytizing God-abiding hippie band had their monitors [...]
