Review + Photos: Nicki Bluhm, Scott Law, Ross James at the Mystic Theatre

Nicki Bluhm (photo: Carolyn McCoy) Words by Carolyn McCoy Singer/songwriter Nicki Bluhm is taller than I thought she would be. She also reminded me of Patti Smith, or possibly Chrissy Hynde, in her features as well. But all that is beside the point, as once she opened her mouth and sang in her clear and high voice, it was only her words and her songs that mattered to me. All initial perceptions of what she was about and who she was as a performer flew out the window. The California native now calls Nashville her home — and with good reason, [...]

Nicki Bluhm’s peace-inspired protest song: “Remember Love Wins”

On Sunday, January 29, Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh held a “Thunder & Lightning”-themed Phil & Friends concert with at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael. In addition to Lesh on bass, the friends on the bill included Bluhm on vox, Stu Allen, Dan Lebowitz, drummer Alex Koford and Jason Crosby rounding out the sound. The concert was held in the wake of the President's now-suspended executive order prohibiting individuals from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States. On January 29, protests were taking place at airports in cities [...]

Listen to Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers’ new LP: ‘Loved Wild Lost’

Loved Wild Lost is the new album from SF's Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers, and you can stream it in its entirety below. Produced by Brian Deck, the album notably features contributions from the Magik*Magik Orchestra, but it's Bluhm's strong vocals and knack for earworm melodies that are center stage here. Equally impressive: the band's ability to seamlessly fold in elements of many genres, country and folk among them, into some extremely listenable rock-pop. https://soundcloud.com/nicki-bluhm/sets/nicki-bluhm-and-the-gramblers Loved Wild Lost is out now, and The Gramblers have a whole bunch of tour dates across the country in upcoming months. All of their [...]

Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers to play June residency at The Rickshaw Stop

It took singing just one cover song, performed sporadically at a New Year's Eve party among friends and fellow musicians, for Nicki Bluhm to kick start her now burgeoning career. The number impressed Mother Hips frontman Tim Bluhm so much that he not only encouraged her to write more and get in front of crowds, but he also helped record and produce her first album, 2008's Toby's Song. The two married later that year and began performing together throughout California and the West Coast with various line-ups, before Nicki finalized the current band known today as Nicki Bluhm & The [...]
