#TBT: Phono del Sol 2014 with Nick Waterhouse and Wye Oak

It's hard to believe that only a year ago, Wye Oak took the Mission Stage at Phono del Sol to play their tantalizing dream-pop after a packed day that included high-energy performances by Nick Waterhouse and Thao & The Get Down Stay Down. Relive all those moments in the official recap video below as we continue our special #tbt series — this time for Phono del Sol 2014. Keep an eye out and you might even spot yourself... https://vimeo.com/102345963 The full 2014 lineup included Wye Oak, Nick Waterhouse, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, Blackbird Blackbird, A Million Billion Dying Sun, The Tambo Rays, [...]

Phono del Sol: Nick Waterhouse uses past as inspiration, not blueprint to copy

Indie soul man Nick Waterhouse doesn’t mince any words about recording in the same room where Nirvana made “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and where more than a hundred gold-certified records from the likes of the Grateful Dead, Tom Petty and Elton John were created. “Yeah, I don’t really care about the history of that place,” the 28-year-old Los Angeles crooner-songwriter-producer — and performer at the 2014 Phono del Sol Music Festival — said of the building formerly known as Sound City Studios. Some might find that statement odd, coming from a musician who’s reinventing rhythm and blues, jazz and surf-tinged rock that [...]

Al Lover remixes Nick Waterhouse's "That Place"

A favorite of The Bay Bridged, San Francisco's Al Lover is back with a jaw-dropping remix of Nick Waterhouse's rhythm and blues masterpiece "That Place". According to Lover, the two met a couple years ago at Rooky Ricardo's Records in the Lower Haight, and their friendship quickly led to discussions of remixing one of Waterhouse's tracks. Eventually, he chose "That Place", the b-side to Waterhouse's 2010 debut single "Some Place". Lover tells us, "I pitched down the saxophone and combined layers of crunchy breaks and percussion drenched in reverb to make the remix sound like something you might hear in [...]

Live This Month: December 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #294)

Live This Month: December 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #294) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. Few new albums and winter conditions mean that there's a seasonal dip in the number of bands hitting the road and coming to town in December. A dip, however, doesn't mean that there aren't noteworthy highlights, including the return of former locals Moon Duo, whose latest LP, Circles, came out earlier this year. As luck would have it, Moon [...]

Video: Nick Waterhouse performs "Some Place" at Different Fur Studios

In the last few years, Nick Waterhouse has become the stuff of San Francisco legend; a one-man R&B revolution. If you haven't encountered his work yet (though you might have: his "I Wanna Know" provides the soundtrack to a currently-airing Acura commercial), he keeps busy crafting down-to-the-gear authentic R&B tunes straight outta 1960. Now, he's released a video for "Some Place", off this year's full-length, Time's All Gone. The video was produced in conjunction with San Francisco-based indie video collective Yours Truly. "Yours Truly started to hear about Nick Waterhouse about a year and a half ago, very early on [...]
