Gregg Turkington alter ego Neil Hamburger plays The Independent on Sunday

Not every comedian can be Kevin Hart. While some comedians revel in the standard tropes of stand-up comedy (observational jokes, punchline deliveries, et cetera), others just can’t abide the by the restrictions of traditional humor. Gregg Turkington certainly falls in the latter category. His onstage alter ego, Neil Hamburger, is a greasy, washed-up lounge act with a horrible combover and a two-dollar tuxedo. When he’s not berating his audience members, he’s delivering groaners of one-liners that assault the sensibilities. And it’s all pretty fucking hilarious. Delighting in turning comedic cliches on their head, the Neil Hamburger character is an [...]

Friday: Neil Hamburger heads to The Independent

The incredibly strange and strangely incredible comedian Neil Hamburger headlines The Independent this Friday night for what may be his biggest local show to-date. Even though he's circled relatively mainstream awareness over the years -- appearing on late night shows, working with Tim & Eric, playing numerous festivals, and opening for bands as big as Tenacious D -- it's fair to suspect that Hamburger will continue to tackle, among other topics, pop culture's biggest stars, taking them down a peg or two in his inimitably off-color fashion. I'm not sure if it's still in his act, but there was a [...]

I have a well-documented love of Neil Hamburger that I won't belabor here, but suffice to say I'm quite excited for Club Chuckles' upcoming eight year anniversary show at the Verdi Club on November 18th. In addition to Mr. Hamburger, the show includes Tim Heidecker from Tim & Eric in a (rare?) solo appearance, as well as Natasha Leggero, Duncan Trussell, and The Kenny “K-Strass” Strasser Yo-Yo Extravaganza. 8pm, $20, all ages. Advance tickets are available now.

America’s Funnyman Neil Hamburger returns to SF for two shows at the Hemlock Tavern

Former SF resident Neil Hamburger returns to the Hemlock Tavern Thursday night for two shows of what past experience suggests will be barely-contained mayhem. I recognize that Hamburger's deranged anti-comedy is something of an acquired taste, but if you are looking for an opportunity to laugh, cry, boo, wince and drink heavily, this is as good an opportunity as any. Below, a track from Hot February Night, a recording from Hamburger's tour opening for Tenacious D several years back. (Do I need to mention that it isn't safe for work?)
