Backseat Beat, Episode 3: My First Earthquake
Backseat Beat is a video series highlighting indie musicians and the city by the Bay. Armed with Flip cameras, we interview bands in the back seat of our '83 Volvo as we spirit them away to unexpected, forgotten corners of San Francisco, where they plug in outdoors to play a few tunes. Each band’s performance transforms these urban spots from their anonymous day to day existence into surreal, magical backdrops. Taking turns in the back seat today is local indie-pop sensation My First Earthquake, also known individually as Rebecca Bortman (vocals), Chad Thornton (keyboard, bass), Andre Salcido (drums), and David [...]

Review: My First Earthquake, The Downer Party, The Attachments @ Rickshaw, 6/17
Photos by: Anna Gazdowicz My First Earthquake has a gift for humor that is tricky to achieve in song. Last Thursday at the Rickshaw Stop they released their new EP, Crush, which has refined what they do best - funny, nerdy dance songs with glimpses of gravity. Starting with old favorites, "Vow to Vowels" and "Cool in the Cool Way," MFE got the upfront audience enthusiastically singing along. The most striking element of their performance was frontwoman Rebecca Bortman's ebullient stage presence and agile voice. With dead-on pitch and unique cadence, Bortman was a pleasure to watch singing live. In [...]
Thursday, 6/17: My First Earthquake release ‘Crush’ @ Rickshaw
Thursday night, get crushed: My First Earthquake is releasing a new EP, Crush at the Rickshaw Stop (9pm, $10). The EP was recorded in one day at Hyde Street Studios, and its four songs ring true to MFE's fun, clever pop with its upbeat rhythms and catchy melodies. The EP is available for free download right now at MFE's Bandcamp page. In describing the sound on the EP, the band says they are drawn to Beck and Prince, "who can explore styles and timbres but still keep a recognizable sound." They added, "two of the songs on the EP are [...]
Noise Pop 2010: !!!, Maus Haus, Sugar & Gold, My First Earthquake @ The Mezzanine
!!!, Maus Haus, Sugar & Gold and My First Earthquake all brought their A-game to the Mezzanine last Saturday night. My First Earthquake, a local electro-pop quartet, opened up the night with their snappy humorous ditties. "Sack Lunch" - about a pervy teacher (Rebecca's words, not mine) - and "Hot Girlfriend" were the standouts of the night. Lead singer Rebecca Bortman is a born show-woman, ribbing her band mates and chatting up the audience before prompting us to rock the fuck out. "Cool in the Cool Way" (which has an accompanying video about Mission hipsters), with its Nintendo-inspired synth riffs, [...]
