Kool Keith, Mike Relm, Crown City Rockers at the Mezzanine

Noise Pop has a focus on the indie rock slant of things, but if whoever was smart enough to book Mike Relm and Kool Keith as co-headliners for Thursday night was a genius. Its important to make the distinction between DJing and turntablism.  Both are art forms in their own right, but actually quite different.  Turntablism in its simplest form is scratching while DJing is more about song selection (think of turntablism as a component of DJing).  This night featured master's of both, and live music to boot. I made it in time to catch Crown City Rockers set.  2 [...]

Mike Relm: Spectacle

Mike Relm's new album is serious. But I don’t mean it lacks fun in any way. The album is both a stray from some of the comedic live mash-ups he is famous for and a symbol of Relm's recent success and his ascent into the "serious" music business. But what's interesting to consider is how Relm got to be where he is – he’s always embraced a quite paradoxical blend between the silly and the serious. When Relm is performing, the stage distends with pumping beats that are often out-there mixes of 80s classics, cartoon themes—the most unlikely hip hop/electronic [...]

Mike Relm’s New Album Spectacle Out Now

Mike Relm, San Francisco's mash-up prince, released his debut original album Spectacle last Tuesday on Radio Fried Records. Relm has made a name for himself nationally as a wicked live turntablist, mashup artist (audio and video) and even film director. He is well known for his innovative blend of songs, as well as his quirky realtime mashups of popular songs from Bjork to the Charlie Brown theme song. His latest adventure was providing music and on-screen entertainment for Tony Hawk's Boom Boom Huck Jam across the country. Mike Relm - "Everytime (feat. Del the Funky Homosapien and Adrian [...]
