Editors' Picks: What We've Been Listening to This Week (Mike Donovan, The Head and the Heart, Poliça, Moonface)

Mike Donovan (photo: Christian Faustus) Jason: Following Sic Alps' dissolution earlier this year, frontman Mike Donovan has struck out on his own, releasing his solo debut Wot last week on his old band's former label, Chicago's Drag City. The two tracks I've heard so far, "Do Do Ya?" and "New Fieldhand Bop", veer far off the garage rock course of Donovan's former band, delving into a bluesier sound than we've previously heard from this fixture of the SF scene. Listen to "New Fieldhand Bop" below, and watch the video for "Do Do Ya?" here. Anna: I'm late to the Head [...]

October brings the return of two of our favorite SF festivals: Hardly Strictly Bluegrass and the Treasure Island Music Festival. Both are local traditions that promise quality music offerings, and while we're including bands from both in this episode, the whole episode could have been devoted to the festivals' prospective highlights. Beyond those two, and TIMF's related [...]

Review & Photos: Ty Segall, Mike Donovan, Jessica Pratt @ Great American Music Hall, 9/2/13

Photos by Emily Turner Ty Segall returned to San Francisco with his new Sleeper Band for a special acoustic performance at the Great American Music Hall last night. Mike Donovan, Jessica Pratt, and David Novick supported the show. Jessica Pratt took the stage around 9pm, battling the buzzing crowd with a quiet, acoustic solo set. The singer-songwriter announced that this would be her last show in San Francisco as a San Francisco resident, and politely asked the noisy crowd in the back of the venue to keep it down. Early on, there seemed to be a rift between [...]

Review & Photos: Psychic Ills, Mike Donovan (Sic Alps), Föllakzoid, AAN @ Hemlock Tavern, 2/28/13 (Noise Pop 2013)

The Hemlock seems an unlikely venue for Noise Pop. The oversized cutesy animated Noise Pop banner looked out of place behind the tiny stage in the dingy nethers of a club that prides itself on featuring "a bleeding-edge, non-mainstream mix of local, national and international bands...subgenres, scenes and microscenes." Like putting a Hello Kitty sticker on a murky bong. That said, it seemed like any ol' night at the Hemlock -- a veritable mix of the too cool for school, too stoned for school, and TL party party people (some of which I wager to guess have never stepped foot [...]
