Mikal Cronin premieres video for "Change," adds tour dates

Recent transplant Mikal Cronin, whose MCII was released a few weeks ago, premiered a video for “Change” with SPIN last week. Another one for the ‘house party gets out of control’ canon, the video revolves around Cronin himself churning out “Change” in the midst of a rowdy gathering, and a faceless being in a hoodie that wanders the crowd. Cronin’s MCII, which is currently conquering cold-hearted critics everywhere, is out on Merge Records right now. He’s also extended this summer’s European tour dates and recently announced a stop at FYF Fest in August. More info can be found on the [...]

Live This Month: May 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #305)

Live This Month: May 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #305) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. Few recent artists have transitioned from lo-fi to hi-fi better than Kurt Vile, whose latest album, Wakin on a Pretty Daze, is another winner from the Philly-based musician, full of long, languid songs that feel spacious but not aimless. A sense of space also guides Clinic's psych-pop offering Free Reign; in fact, the group just released an alternate collection, [...]

Stream Mikal Cronin's LP 'MCII' (release show @ Rickshaw Stop 5/25/13)

Mikal Cronin's sophomore LP MCII isn't officially out until next Tuesday, May 7, but you can stream the whole record over on NPR right now. The album, which is being released via Merge Records, isn't short on grinding garage rock guitars, but as NPR's Stephen Thompson notes, MCII "mixes shambling rock with a perfectionist ear with quality control, as its star (who plays most of the instruments himself) applies a beachy sparkle to 37 minutes of fresh, fun rock 'n' roll." Listen to album opener "Weight" below, and head over to NPR to check out the entire record. Preorder MCII [...]

Mikal Cronin – "Shout it Out"; from new album on Merge out 5/7/13

Frequent Ty Segall collaborator and kindred musical spirit Mikal Cronin has announced the release of MCII, his debut on Merge Records, on May 7th. Though 2011’s self-titled debut, which featured ol’ Ty on drums, seemed pretty sunny to us, Cronin says MCII focuses on "new beginnings," one of which is a recent move from his hometown of Los Angeles to San Francisco. MCII is available for pre-order at the Merge store. Check out the exuberant first drop, “Shout it Out,” via the widget below. Cronin will also be taking a brief tour of the West coast, culminating in a stop [...]

Ty Segall's new band Fuzz is set for Noise Pop 2013

After releasing three albums last year, Ty Segall is already back at it. As we told you at the beginning of January, he just released a 7-inch single with his guitarist Charlie Mootheart under the moniker Fuzz. The 7-inch, which features the tracks "This Time I Got a Reason" and "Fuzz's Fourth Dream", is already sold out, but you can still stream it via YouTube (below) or Spotify. Apparently, Fuzz's record label Trouble in Mind attempted to keep the project anonymous, going so far as to claim they "received an unsolicited email submission from [the band] & despite our best [...]

San Francisco psych-garage rocker Mikal Cronin will headline the Milk Bar in San Francisco on Friday, June 1st. If you haven't seen the frequent Ty Segall collaborator perform on his own yet, now's your chance to enjoy Cronin's ear for blistering and catchy garage pop tunes.
