Live This Month: December 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #321)

It's December again, which means something of a slow down in the world of live music. Tours become more infrequent as bands avoid winter weather, and few albums are being released during a time when most critics are putting the finishing touches on their best-of lists. Likely to appear on more than a few of those lists [...]

The Bay Brewed is THIS Saturday at Public Works (DJ Jamie Jams joins the party)

Somehow, some way, the calendar already flipped to December, which can mean only one thing. No, this has nothing to do with Santa Claus – it's something even better. The Bay Brewed – San Francisco's only indie rock beer fest – is this Saturday, December 7 at Public Works, with live performances from Mikal Cronin, Shannon and the Clams, Kelley Stoltz, Golden Void, French Cassettes, Magic Fight, and the North Beach Brass Band, accompanied by unlimited beer tastings from a group of 13 SF-based brewers put together by the San Francisco Brewers Guild and food from Doc's of the Bay [...]

The Bay Brewed 2013: Mikal Cronin, Shannon and the Clams to headline our rock and roll beer festival!

On December 7, 2013, SF's only indie rock beer festival, The Bay Brewed, returns to Public Works for a third year of great music and beer. We're now pleased to announce the festival's lineup six amazing local rock bands, led by Mikal Cronin and Shannon and the Clams. Both acts have had banner 2013s, releasing two of our favorite albums, MCII and Dreams in the Rat House, and they're both consistently great live performers. While you're enjoying all of the excellent music, you'll be enjoying unlimited tastings from over a dozen local breweries all day long thanks to the SF [...]

Watch Mikal Cronin's new video for "Peace of Mind"

Continuing to ride the wave of his sophomore solo effort (and Merge debut) MCII, local son Mikal Cronin dropped a new video for "Peace of Mind" just this morning. The video was directed by Lara Gallagher and stars Mary Timony (Wild Flag, Helium), and it follows a (predictably thrilling) day in the life of a hotel maid. Cronin also announced December gigs in three (non-Bay Area) cities, so if you happen to be LA, New York, or Chicago between Thanksgiving and Christmas, see if you can check out SF's rising star while he's on the road. Watch the video for [...]

Review: Superchunk & Mikal Cronin @ The Fillmore, 9/3/13

The Fillmore is for people of a very specific stature in music. On one hand, it can be a bittersweet place; the last stop on the road to what most people would call fame. On the other, it can be a place that bands who never left that strata of fame, either by force or by choice, can always come back to; a place where they know they are always loved. Both of those titles were at play on Tuesday night, for what was likely a dream lineup in many peoples’ minds – a joint headlining venture between North Carolina’s [...]

Editors’ Picks: What We’ve Been Listening to This Week (Mikal Cronin, Weekend, James The Giant)

Anna: All Mikal Cronin, all day long. I cannot explain why or how this happens, but Mikal's MCII has the ability to both energize and soothe, acting as the perfect antidote to the stressed and weary brain. I cannot get enough of this record. I'm not prone to saying things like "is it too early to call this my favorite album of 2013?!?!" . . . but there it is. (P.S. If you haven't already, be sure to watch Mikal's recent performance on CONAN.)   Ben: It still feels a little weird to tack on "Brooklyn-via-" [...]
