Go be emotional with Emotional at the Golden Bull tonight

Going to see Emotional (Brian Wakefield of Death Records/Melted Toys) is the perfect way to say "I am not over summer, summer is not over, stop trying to tell me it is, because it's not." Summer is not over. Summer is never over, and Emotional has the perfect tunes to always remind you that Summer is always in the air. Summer and the freedom that comes with it, are not something that just disappears. I am obviously very emotional about summer. Overall, Emotional is the perfect solo project to come out of Melted Toys, Brain Wakefield. The tunes still have [...]

Melted Toys to play self-titled album release show at Slim’s

San Francisco's Melted Toys are having a rather busy July. The lo-fi quartet not only really a new album on July 15 (their self-titled debut via Underwater Peoples), but they're also headlining a date at Slim's the night before to celebrate the occasion. Three years since their psychedelic EP Washed and Dried presented their pared-down, dreamy mien, Melted Toys are finally releasing their debut full length album. The three year wait was not necessarily planned—one of the members left the laptop containing most of the initial work on a BART train—but the band pressed forward stronger, re-locating to LA and Asia to regroup [...]

Melted Toys announce debut LP

Melted Toys have announced their self-titled debut LP, to be released on July 15th via New Jersey label Underwater Peoples. The record is a long time coming, a lengthy five years after the group’s commencement, and three years after the release of their debut Washed & Dried EP. Melted Toys isn’t just the culmination of a handful of years as a band. It’s the story of a group of San Francisco natives; of a laptop containing years of musical material left on a BART train; of a later relocation to Los Angeles; and of vocalist and guitarist Steven Harkins’ journey [...]

Listen to 'Forever,' the new LP from Painted Palms

San Francisco's Painted Palms are releasing their first full-length LP, Forever, next week on January 14 via Polyvinyl, but you can hear it now streaming over at Pitchfork Advance. Their second release since last March's Carousel 7", Forever was written the same way that the duo of Reese Donohue and Christopher Prudhomme made music when they were living in different states -- piecing together elements composed separately. https://soundcloud.com/polyvinyl-records/painted-palms-forever/ Despite that approach, Forever shows no signs of disjoint—the 60s psych-pop reverent tracks are smoothly built, and the album's bright sounds seem as cohesive as ever. But while the album sounds as perpetually sunny as its title, the subject [...]

Mac DeMarco to release debut full length (coming to Rickshaw Stop with Melted Toys & Surf Club, 9/14/12)

The up and coming Montreal pop crooner Mac DeMarco will bring one of his reportedly "wildly unhinged live performances" to San Francisco this summer. He will be performing on Friday, September 14th at the Rickshaw Stop, with support from local indie rock favorites Surf Club and Melted Toys. Formerly the frontman of Makeout Videotape, DeMarco released his debut Rock and Roll Night Club EP earlier this year on Captured Tracks. Described by DeMarco as "jizz jazz," his style recalls 50s rockabilly and 80s new wave with an original flair of contemporary glam and accomplished songwriting. He will follow up the [...]

Australia's Twerps on tour with Real Estate, playing Great American tonight, 4/24/12

For their self-titled debut LP, Australia’s Twerps embrace the musical antecedents of that region -- Aussie bands like Go-Betweens and The Church, and the Kiwi Dunedin Sound championed by Flying Nun Records (based out of Christchurch, actually) and Xpressway -- as well as the band’s contemporaries. Twerps is a collection of eleven simple and endearing pop songs. On the sing-along track, "Who Are You," perhaps a nod to the pub-rock scene popularized in the 1980s, the band is joined by members of Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Beaches, and Panel of Judges all chorusing, "We'll get drunk/ We'll get stoned/ We'll [...]

Noise Pop 2012: Young Prisms, Melted Toys, The Tambo Rays @ Cafe Du Nord 2/22/12

[nggallery id=120222-np-youngprisms] The theme at Cafe Du Nord last night was shoegazey/dreamy pop. Oh, and ironic t-shirts. Though there was a common theme to the bands, it got served up in a few different permutations. The Tambo Rays were by far the most dynamic performers of the night, bringing an energy and charisma that the other bands weren't even going for. They had what I'd call a "blue collar hipster" charm that really worked for them, and they just generally seemed to enjoy being on stage making their music. Maybe because they announced that one of their songs was "about [...]

Saturday, 11/19: Food drive show at El Rio with Melted Toys, PreTeen

Keep it Nice by PreTeen Saturday, November 19th at El Rio (2-8pm, $7 or $5 with a can of food), the folks at Night Fog Reader are presenting a great show/food drive for the Dolores Shelter Program, a shelter for working homeless men. Bring canned food to help the shelter, use the $2 you'll save on admission to buy beer, and enjoy performances by Melted Toys, PreTeen, TINT and La Feline. That's some good stuff!
