Oakland’s Meernaa announces new EP, playing Bottom of the Hill

On April 14, the mysterious project coming out of Oakland known as Meernaa will be headlining Bottom of the Hill along with Outer Embassy and Luke Temple. Meernaa also just released "Wildest Eyes," the first video and single from the group's debut Strange Life EP. The band was founded by Tiny Telephone producers Carly Bond and Rob Shelton in 2015. Since then, they've stayed quite elusive, releasing only a string of singles since their formation. All of that changes with Strange Life, out June 8 on Native Cat Recordings. Bond's vocal range allows the band, which now also includes Andrew [...]

Kacey Johansing and Meernaa celebrate new releases at Rickshaw

A few interconnected musicians are celebrating new releases tomorrow night at Rickshaw Stop, and you should get excited! Headlining the night is Kacey Johansing, who's releasing her first post-Yesway solo album The Hiding. The Hiding was largely recorded in spiritual cousins West Marin and Big Sur, and it feels like it. It's a highlight record for me this year and it should be purchased while you listen below. The Hiding by Kacey Johansing Meernaa has steadily been releasing one-off singles over the past few years, with a sound defined by Carly Bond's strong vocals, surprising rhythms, and Rob Shelton's synth [...]

Mixtape: Northern California’s Best Music Festivals

This episode first appeared on KQED.org. http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/Festivals_2017_Mixtape.mp3 Download: Mixtape: Northern California's Best Music Festivals (Podcast #407) Music festival season unofficially kicked off over Memorial Day weekend, with the latest installment of the BottleRock Napa Valley festival attracting 120,000 attendees for three days of food, wine, and over 80 bands ranging from the Foo Fighters to the Napa Youth Symphony. The number and types of music fests has grown considerably in recent years -- among this year's new offerings are not one, but two new music and comedy weekends coming to the Bay in June -- surely to the dismay of [...]

Video Premiere: Find a dance partner in Meernaa’s “Redwood”

Oakland genre-less band Meernaa has been busy in the studio recording a host of singles to be released in 2017, and we're pleased to share their first release of 2017 with "Redwood", via the incredible video below. https://vimeo.com/198633382 The visuals for the "Redwood" video began when its director, Cooper Kenward, was recording an album of his own at Tiny Telephone, where Meerna's Carly Bond and Rob Shelton work. Between sessions, Bond and Shelton shared "Redwood" with Kenward, who immediately connected and wanted to make a video for it. "Cooper started conjuring up some concepts about the duality of the spirit [...]

Meernaa – “10/9”

One of Oakland's newest dreamy pop outfits, Meernaa, has just shared a new track, "10/9" ahead of a pair of February shows. As we learned on their debut, Meernaa's Carly Bond has an incredible voice, and her bandmates Rob Shelton and Nick Deryss help her produce dreamy yet sharp soundscapes. The track lives somewhere in the vicinity of where jazz, spacey synths, and world rhythms intersect, (which I think is somewhere around North Oakland). 10/9 by Meernaa Meernaa plays tonight at the Night Light in Oakland with MRCH, followed by a show March 29 at Bottom of the Hill with [...]

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/Bands_to_Watch_2016.mp3 Download: Mixtape: Fourteen San Francisco Bands to Watch in 2016 (Podcast #379) Every year, it's an exciting challenge to compile our "Bands to Watch" mixtape: exciting because it heralds another year full of great music from the Bay Area's rising stars, and a challenge because there are far too many young acts worth including. This year's mix of bands to keep an eye on in 2016 collects fourteen artists from around the Bay Area. Notably, all of them are new to The Bay Bridged podcast, offering a variety of sounds that include forward-thinking bedroom pop, stripped-down singer-songwriter tunes, energized [...]

Get to know: Meernaa

Oakland's Meernaa is a new trio from Oakland formed by Carly Bond and Rob Shelton of the now-inactive DRMS. Although they've only released a single track, "Constant Love", you can tell good things from Meernaa are on the way. Everything about the track is unique - the highs and lows of Bond's voice, the rough bassline, the in-your-face percussion - yet it stands on it's own as an easy-to-listen-to, dreamy pop song. Constant Love by Meernaa Bond and Shelton are joined by drummer Nik DeRyss, and Bond tells me the three are still experimenting with their style and sound while [...]
