Brijean signs to Ghostly International, releases “Moody”

Photo by Jack Bool Brijean, the duo of percussionist/singer Brijean Murphy and multi-instrumentalist Doug Stuart, returns with a new single and some pretty big news. They've signed to Ghostly International, current home of Tycho and Shigeto, among many others. Ghostly has also re-released the duo's excellent debut album Walkie Talkie. Both members of Brijean are accomplished in their own right; Murphy has toured internationally with Poolside, Toro y Moi, and U.S. Girls. Stuart has performed with a host of Bay Area bands for the past decade plus, including Bells Atlas, Meernaa, and Luke Temple. Together, the two musicians [...]

Photos: Meernaa, The Y Axes, Spooky Mansion bid farewell to Amnesia

Spooky Mansion (photo: Ian Young) Amnesia is the latest victim of a rapidly changing San Francisco, but before the beloved Mission bar and club closes its doors at the end of the month, three local favorites helped bid it farewell on Friday night. Check out photos of Spooky Mansion, The Y Axes and Meernaa below, and make sure to visit Amnesia for one last beer before it's too late.

Best Of 2019: Ian Young’s favorite show photos from 2019

Princess Nokia (photo: Ian Young) It was another year of incredible live music, from catching my favorite artists playing at my favorite festivals to discovering new acts playing in new cities and new venues. In total, I photographed 104 shows and 9 festivals, seeing a total of 394 performances. (Thank goodness for earplugs and insoles.) It was also a year where I explored new ways to express myself artistically, expanded my photography comfort zone, met some amazing new photographers, and of course had a helluva time in the pit. It may only last for three songs, but the photo pit [...]

Photos: Meernaa at Starline Social Club

Meernaa (photo: Ian Young) Oakland's Meernaa threw a party on Saturday night at Starline Social Club to celebrate the release of their first full length, Heart Hunger. Playing with string chamber ensemble Capo and backup vocalists Taylor Vick (aka Boy Scouts) and Rose Droll, it was an evening of incredible performances by some of the Bay Area's best musicians. Electro-pop band Yassou kicked things off with a powerful set that included a rendition of Radiohead's "Videotape" complete with string accompaniment. Heart Hunger is out on Native Cat Recordings and is available to stream, download and spin. [...]

Serious in all the right ways: An interview with Meernaa

(photo: Ginger Fierstein) Meernaa’s frontwoman Carly Bond is a charming goofball — perhaps not entirely what one might expect after hearing her pour so much soul into the songs off their newest album, Heart Hunger. “Sometimes people are like, ‘Hey, Meernaa!’ And I’m like ‘Oops, nope! It’s Carly!’” says Bond when asked about the band’s name (it’s actually the name of the street she grew up on). So no, Meernaa is not one person but is the effort of a full band of killer-diller musicians whose collaborative energy is a rare find. After releasing some singles and LPs over the [...]

Photos: John Vanderslice + Meernaa at the Rickshaw Stop

John Vanderslice (photo: Ian Young) It was a celebration of Bay Area music on Sunday night when the man at the center of so much of it, John Vanderslice, celebrated the release of his latest album The Cedars by playing a show at the Rickshaw Stop. Exciting up-and-comer Meernaa opened the night with members of the band joining Vanderslice on stage for most of his set.

SXSW Day Five: Tired feet, BBQ comas, and Priests! PRIESTS!

Priests (photo: Ian Young) Photos and additional reporting by Ian Young and Norm deVeyra Norm's Highlights The highs of the previous night's Lizzo performance gave way to some lows on Day 5, as the weeks’s late nights finally caught up with me and the exhaustion hit hard. Not even a BBQ pit stop and the prospects of a killer late night Priests set could fuel a second wind of energy, and I packed it in for an early evening. A few performances did standout from the handful of sets I did see: Meernaa’s outdoor performance at The Side Bar set [...]

We’re co-presenting Lapel and Emily Afton at Cafe du Nord. Join us.

If you haven't heard Lapel's debut record, Periphery, by now, after all our shouting about it, we aren't sure what it will take for you to do so. One way you can help us help you: Head out to Cafe du Nord on October 11 and hear it live and in person. To be clear, this isnt Lapel's "debut" in the truest sense of the word: Debbie Neigher has been slowly making a transformation from the piano-based balladry made under her given name to the smooth electronic sounds and urgent themes of Lapel. Featuring a backing band bursting at the [...]
