Review + Photos: The She’s define the Bay Area punk scene at The Independent

The She's (photo: Kristin Cofer) As soon as I got in line, I was surrounded by members of other bands in the Bay Area. From Quaaludes to Jay Som to Bear Call to Sirena Victima to Pardoner. The She's brought out everyone, even people who probably have never played a show together, but all love The She's and the Bay Area scene. After one of the most stressful weeks of the year — already — we all were there together for a band that makes everyone happy, not only when seeing them live, listening to them alone on the 28 bus [...]

The Bay Abridged: Aug 17 – 30

(illustration: Cassidy Miller) In this recurring feature known as The Bay Abridged, our staff writers provide short, witty recaps on shows they attended around the Bay Area. A scene check, a heat check, and sometimes more — stop by every other Wednesday for the most comprehensive and concise recap of the Bay Area concert scene. The Redlight District, Bobcat Rob Armenti at Don Quixote’s International Music Hall (Felton) Aug. 17. On Wednesday the 17th, Santa Cruz’s favorite psychedelic hard rock and roll quartet The Redlight District kicked off a 4-gig mini-tour in Felton at Don Quixote’s. The boys took the [...]

KDVS presents: ORMF XVI Festival in Davis

There aren't many festivals where you can see 18 great bands and artists for only 17 dollars, but there is KDVS's Operation Restore Maximum Freedom Festival or to be short and real: ORMF XVI Festival. Not only does its name have two meanings — one pertaining to the freeform format of the station, and one stating that they are mostly funded by the listeners and community — this festival is for the people who may live a little to out of the way to get to the house show in Oakland or SF on a Wednesday night. This is for the [...]

Meat Market made a new album, “Dig Deep”

The word "catchy" is weird - I think it describes an ability. A catchy song does something a non-catchy song can't? I call a song catchy, and that's usually the final frontier in so far as descriptors go. Like, more than anything, catchy feels like a way of saying, "I felt a quickness in compatibility with those sounds." But there's usually not much more to say. It feels like the word is actually just signposting the most basic musical reflexes, reflexes so basic they're unnoticed and hard to describe other than: "I like when people drum like that," or "I like when people sing/talk/yell like that." Catchy [...]

Guantanamo Baywatch bring friends to Bottom of the Hill Thursday

If you're too impatient to wait for Friday for the weekend to start, why not start the weekend on a Thursday? Guantanamo Baywatch and my favorite Aussies, Gooch Palms are on tour and stopping in SF this Thursday. Oakland locals Meat Market are even opening. Knowing these three bands, this will not be a boring show, and will be the perfect way to start off your weekend. Guantanamo Baywatch with their surf rock ways and instant classic tunes never keep a crowd unamused. The Gooch Palms are currently one of my favorites with their interstellar talent, and undeniable way to suck [...]

Vancouver’s Energy Slime and Tough Age playing pair of Bay Area shows

Canadian duo Energy Slime is on tour with their label mates, Tough Age, in support of their debut release, New Dimensional, out now on Mint Records. The two Vancouver-based pop bands will perform on April 25 at Eli's Mile High Club in Oakland, and on April 28 at El Rio in San Francisco. Stockton's Monster Treasure will support them for both shows, with Oakland's Meat Market joining the bill for Saturday's Oakland show. Premiere: Meat Market – “Hole” (plus tour dates!)

(Photo Credit: Rebecca Lukens) Today we are happy to bring you a brand new track from Meat Market - an Oakland quartet that has been making great garage-pop since early 2011, when members met while at school in Santa Cruz. Members Jeff, Alex, Jake and Ian are all heavily involved in the Bay Area music and art scene, making music and visual art in various forms. Meat Market seem to be constantly working on and releasing new music- sometimes in the form of a formal album, like 2012's Self-Titled LP that came out on Under The Gun Records, or the various cassette singles and digital [...]

Meat Market drops “Big Cookie” and “Floor”

It's been over a year since we've heard something new from Oakland's Meat Market, but last night they quietly dropped a pair of new tracks on their Bandcamp page. "Big Cookie" is one of the more introspective tunes we've heard from Meat Market, showing a slight, yet intriguing departure from their signature surf/punk/rock sound, while "Floor" is right in their catchy, powerful wheelhouse. The Meat Market boys tell me these are the only tracks they're sharing for now, as they gear up for more releases in 2015. Check it: Big Cookie/Floor by MEAT MARKET
