Marriages, the alternative-rock band from Los Angeles, recently released their debut full-length album, titled Salome. The record is dark, brooding, intense and delicately crafted--all in a way that is done seamlessly and, seemingly, without much effort. Coming after a first EP, Kitsune, several years ago, Marriages' new LP shows a concise, technical sound that is advanced and impressive. Browner Deafheaven vocalist George Clarke cultivated a peculiar psychopath/serial killer/hitman vibe onstage at Bottom of the Hill Monday night, wearing his trademark all-black outfit plus black gloves. He is one intense dude. His band's music is rife with long instrumental passages of experimental noise and psychedelic exploration, during which Clarke stalks the stage like he's possessed, glowers at the crowd, and makes what look like threatening gestures. Sometimes he appears to be gagging himself with his own fingers. But then the next minute he's screaming in a black metal screech so full of menace and foreboding [...]

Deafheaven tours new album 'Sunbather', playing two SF shows

San Francisco's buzzworthy black metal band Deafheaven is gearing up for the release of its new LP Sunbather by playing three West Coast shows with Boris, followed by a full U.S. headlining tour backed by Marriages. Included in the itinerary are two San Francisco shows – with Boris on May 22 at Rickshaw Stop, and with Marriages on July 15 at Bottom of the Hill. Sunbather is due on June 11 via Deathwish Records.
