Majical Cloudz releases “Love Soul” video ahead of Noise Pop show

After releasing one of the best albums of 2013, Montreal duo Majical Cloudz returns with its second post-album single, "Love Soul". The song is paired with a black-and-white, interactive music video directed by Mitch Moore with cinematographer Bobby Shore and producer Alexandre Auray. Songwriter/vocalist Devon Welsh explained that "Love Soul" was written during the same period as several songs from last year's Impersonator, but was left off the album. The track features Welsh's distinctive vocals on top of a simple, yet infectious synth loop from producer Matt Otto. "It was the only song I kept from a time when I was [...]

Review & Photos: Majical Cloudz, Moon King, Some Ember @ Rickshaw Stop, 8/24/13

For most concertgoers I know, this weekend presented a lot of hard decisions -- there was My Bloody Valentine on Friday, FYF in Los Angeles all weekend, the 20th Street Block Party on Saturday afternoon, and of course, the First City Festival in Monterey on Saturday and Sunday. I decided with splitting the difference; having gone to FYF last year, in addition to wanting to save my ear drums for other excursions, I went with staying in town on Saturday for the block party then heading to Monterey on Sunday, which conveniently meant that I could also catch Majical Cloudz [...]

Live This Month: August 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #311)

Live This Month: August 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #311) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. You can't talk about Bay Area concerts in August without acknowledging the biggest of them all, the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, which returns to Golden Gate Park from August 9-11. The festival is sold out, and with good reason: the lineup offers everything from Paul McCartney and Nine Inch Nails to King Tuff and local bands like [...]

Majical Cloudz to perform at Aquarius Records

Free show alert: Majical Cloudz is performing live at Aquarius Records tonight, Wednesday, July 24th at 6pm. It's free and all ages and promises a certain intensity. As Zack Frederick said, when he caught the band earlier this year: But what he lacked in style, he made up for in raw intensity — Welsh feels these songs and by the end of the set it was obvious that he can express his pain with an astounding vocal minimalism, relying on subtle turns and slow movements.

Review & Photos: Autre Ne Veut, Majical Cloudz, Bago @ Independent, 3/11/2013

Following in the footsteps of other bedroom artists turned headliners (Toro Y Moi comes to mind), Brooklyn’s Autre Ne Veut — the one-man project of Arthur Ashin — represents the best of the internet’s ability to propel talent onto bigger and bigger stages. Recently tagged with a Best New Music award from Pitchfork for his 2013 LP Anxiety, Autre Ne Veut writes nu-R&B that’s manic and catchy, stylized with layers of retro synths and creatively twisted vocals. Throughout Monday night’s well-attended show at the Independent, Ashin carried himself with a surprisingly powerful stage presence, a backwards baseball cap adding to [...]

Majical Cloudz signs to Matador Records, set to play the Independent 3/11/13

Signing to Matador Records, putting out a new video on Yours Truly, and already on a North American tour, it's an exciting time to be in Montreal's Majical Cloudz. After releasing the acclaimed Turns Turns Turns EP last year, chief songwriter Devon Welsh, along with producer Matthew Otto, are the newest act to sign with Matador and hope to put out their first release on the label later this year. Majical Cloudz create a space-like, synth-driven minimal musical landscape while still evoking emotionally charged lyrics. Welsh and Otto strike a balance in their songs that is, at it's heart, a complex [...]

Autre Ne Veut coming to The Independent with Majical Cloudz and Bago, 3/11/13

Autre Ne Veut, the solo new-R&B project of Brooklyn's Arthur Ashin, will be performing at The Independent in San Francisco on March 11 with Majical Cloudz and Bago as part of a tour in support of his second full-length album, Anxiety, out February 26 via Software/Mexican Summer. The album is the follow up to his 2010 self-titled debut. On Anxiety, Autre Ne Veut drops the lo-fi aesthetic and mysterious character persona of his first album, arriving with an emotionally charged, high definition pop sound. Watch the video for the album's first single "Counting" below, featuring Mykki Blanco. Ashin lived with [...]
