Live This Month: April 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #276)

Live This Month: April 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #276) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. In curating this podcast, we got the nagging feeling that April is a little slow on the local album release front. We're not sure why that is -- Festival fatigue? Buildup for a big summer? -- but it's likely only a momentary blip. A number of exciting new Bay Area records are coming soon, and we're especially psyched about [...]

Magic Trick – "Torture" from upcoming LP + limited SxSW flexi disc, both out on Hardly Art

Magic Trick - "Torture" Another beautifully dark and heart-wrenching track comes from the Tim Cohen-led Magic Trick, "Torture," from their upcoming Hardly Art release, Ruler of the Night. Complete with those beautiful cascading vocals that bridge into an unending dream, this song could go on forever without notice, or at least get away with jamming it out live for an extra five minutes. In celebration of Hardly Art's fifth birthday, the Seattle-based label put out a Magic Trick/Seapony split on flexi disc, limited to SxSW attendees lucky enough to get their hands on a free Hardly Art zine. Both of [...]

Mixtape: Twelve Bay Area Highlights from 2011 (Podcast #263)

Mixtape: Twelve Bay Area Highlights from 2011 (Podcast #263) We might be biased, but, from this vantage point, 2011 reconfirmed that the Bay Area continues to have the most vibrant music community nationwide. The SF scene cranked out a ton of amazing albums this year, and our final podcast of 2011 highlights twelve great releases from Bay Area artists over the past twelve months. This isn't a "Best of" list per se, but these acts did create some of our favorite music in 2011. We'll be doing more year-in-review coverage over the next few weeks, but, for now, enjoy this [...]

Dusty Stax/Bold Italic Winter Dance Formal Party, featuring garage rock supergroup (12/10/11)

The Verdi Club will be hosting fantastic events two Saturdays in a row. This Saturday, December 3rd, will feature the Bay Brewed (sorry, couldn't resist). And next Saturday, December 10th, Dusty Stax and the Bold Italic have put together a very special event in the spirit of the holiday. This Winter Formal Dance will feature classy attire and a plethora of local garage rock musicians: Over the summer, Dusty Stax's "Let Her Dance" took San Francisco back in a time machine for a huge celebration of '60s soul. Guests donned their vintage best and packed the Verdi Club as local [...]

Photos: Tim Cohen/Magic Trick, Magic Bullets, Tambo Rays @ Rickshaw Stop, 8/24/11

Last Wednesday the Rickshaw was packed with those celebrating the release of Tim Cohen's new LP The Glad Birth of Love, as well as the tentatively labeled "farewell show" for longtime indie pop Bay Area band Magic Bullets. In recent years, new members have come into Magic Bullets and their set has evolved as a result, but, for this special evening, they also performed a few old songs. Their set opened with a hit from the early years, "Heatstroke" - which has the fun fact of being licensed for the 2007 Lisa Kudrow movie, Kabluey. Later, the band threw in [...]
