Photos: Here Tonight: A Tribute to Gene Clark at The Chapel

Here Tonight: A Tribute to Gene Clark (photo: Kristin Cofer) Last Thursday saw a touching tribute to The Byrds' Gene Clark at the Chapel under the title  Here Tonight: A Tribute to Gene Clark. Gene Clark's son was in attendance for the tribute that ranged from Kelley Stoltz, Golden Void, Magic Trick, Sweet Chariot, The Richmond Sluts, Kai Clark and Midnight Sons. Check out the gallery from the night below that our photographer Kristin Cofer captured.

Ticket Giveaway: Kelley Stoltz + Magic Trick at The Chapel tomorrow!

The first time I ever saw Kelley Stoltz live was at The Chapel about a year and half ago. It was all a sort of fantastic memorable. He sat down and the audience sang along to some of their favorite tunes. There's no denying the sort of hometown glory Stoltz has in San Francisco. He's from the city, and while he has played all around the world and been on labels as big as Sub-Pop, he's remain true to his Beatles-meets-Kinks-meets-Beach Boys sound and style. https://soundcloud.com/kelley-stoltz/hot-igloo-fromthe-scuzzy-inputs-of-willie-weird Pair that up with Tim Cohen (of The Fresh & Only's) most recent project, Magic Trick, [...]

Tim Cohen of Magic Trick and The Fresh & Onlys returns to SF

We are very stoked to announce that Tim Cohen, mastermind behind Magic Trick and The Fresh & Onlys, has moved back to San Francisco after having lived in Arizona for the past year. Though he's been away, the fuzzy pop connoisseur has remained a constant presence in our scene with 2013 releases from both of his bands: The Onlys' Soothsayer EP and Magic Trick's River of Souls LP. Cohen will be making his homecoming performance as a reinstated resident of the Bay this Saturday, February 22, with Magic Trick at the Chapel. If you haven't allowed yourself the chance to get into this [...]

Mixtape: Fourteen of the Bay Area's Best Record Labels (Podcast #325)

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/Record_Labels_Mix.mp3 Download: Mixtape: The Bay Area's Best Record Labels (Podcast #325) It's conventional wisdom nowadays that bands no longer need record labels to release music into the world. Still, it would be foolish to think that labels no longer matter. A label association can be a critical stamp of approval for potential new fans; the best labels build audiences' trust to the point that they'll support new artists even before hearing them. All of this is to say nothing, of course, of the distribution services labels can offer, and any financial or booking support they might also provide. In recent [...]

Magic Trick drops single "Crazy Teeth"

Tim Cohen-led project Magic Trick is releasing River of Souls, its third installment, this December 3 via Empty Cellar Records. Recorded in Cohen's own attic studio (which he named The Tree House), the new album approaches themes of love and escapism via the lo-fi pop he is known for within his foggy hometown. The ten-tracked album brandishes sparring female vocalists over James Kim's percussion and Alicia Vanden Heuvel's driving basslines. But Tim Cohen/Fresh & Onlys purists need not fear—Magic Trick's third album features Cohen jams through and through. Don't believe us? Check out "Crazy Teeth" and the previous single "Come Inside" below. [...]

Ticket giveaway: Magic Trick at the Chapel

Here's a small point of confusion: Magic Trick's show at the Chapel on September 14th is being billed as a record release for The Glad Birth of Love. It was my understanding, however, that this record came out a couple of years ago via Empty Cellar Records. But who cares! Go see Magic Trick at the Chapel, because they're a fantastic band fronted by Tim Cohen (the Fresh & Onlys). And the bill is rounded out by the trio of The Range of Light Wilderness, Pure Bliss, and Cool Ghouls. Can't go wrong. Buy advance tickets here! UPDATE: We've been [...]

Review & Photos: Sonny & the Sunsets, Magic Trick, Cool Ghouls, and Dune Rats @ BOTH 3/2/13 (Noise Pop 2013)

Noise Pop 2013 - Sonny & the Sunsets @ Bottom of the Hill 3/2/13 - photo by Jackie Andrews I was excited to check out Dune Rats, who came all the way out here from Australia to melt ears with their slacker rock, but a single-tracking BART train from the East Bay made me late. Luckily I was able to catch the last half of their set. Self-described as a “budstep” band, they do a pretty good job of channeling the early 90s aesthetic of Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, Nirvana, Wayne’s World, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for starters. In other [...]

Video: Magic Trick – "Invisible At Midnight"

Magic Trick recently premiered their video for "Invisible At Midnight", a track off their latest album Ruler of the Night, over on Stereogum. The video, directed by Mat Dara and featuring animation by both Dara and bandleader Tim Cohen, tells the tale of a little girl, her goldfish, and the "magic trick" needed to bring it back to life after it eats a bit too much fish food. Check it out below. Grab a free mp3 of "Invisible At Midnight" here, and be sure to pick up a copy of Ruler of the Night, released June 12th on Hardly Art.
