Premiere & Interview: Magic Fight’s swan song

Magic Fight made some noise locally last year when they released their debut album, participated in the Music Video Race, and capped it off with an appearance at our very own Bay Brewed. Sadly, they became yet another casualty of rising rents in the Bay Area, with front man Alex Haager moving to Portland to start Breakup Records, which will retain a strong local presence despite their headquarters up north. Tomorrow, they're releasing their final release, two songs as part of a split cassette single with Frozen Folk. You can't purchase the cassette until tomorrow, but you can listen to [...]

Best of 2013: Russell Jelinek's highlights

John Murry (Photo by Amoreena Berg) I don't feel like ranking things, but here are some Bay Area highlights for 2013, limited to artists I wrote about: Favorite Albums: John Murry - Graceless Age: I tried to listen to Graceless Age in the background while doing some work on the computer. It didn't work. Murry punched me in the gut and took me away from whatever I was doing and totally consumed me. The standout "Little Colored Balloons", about Murry's heroin overdose in the Mission, may one of the most heartbreaking songs ever recorded, but there is so much more [...]

The Bay Brewed is THIS Saturday at Public Works (DJ Jamie Jams joins the party)

Somehow, some way, the calendar already flipped to December, which can mean only one thing. No, this has nothing to do with Santa Claus – it's something even better. The Bay Brewed – San Francisco's only indie rock beer fest – is this Saturday, December 7 at Public Works, with live performances from Mikal Cronin, Shannon and the Clams, Kelley Stoltz, Golden Void, French Cassettes, Magic Fight, and the North Beach Brass Band, accompanied by unlimited beer tastings from a group of 13 SF-based brewers put together by the San Francisco Brewers Guild and food from Doc's of the Bay [...]

Video: Kitten Grenade – "Gray"

Last month, San Francisco ukulelist Kitten Grenade, (aka Katelyn Sullivan), released a video for the track "Grey," the first single from her upcoming EP, which will come out on Breakup Records next year. Sullivan avoids the plague of boring ukulele folk singers by adding great layers to the arrangement that looped in my head over and over after I initially heard it. Kitten Grenade will be performing Wednesday Night at Bottom of the Hill. This is one of the first (if not THE first) release for brand-new label for Breakup Records, which was founded by Alex Haager of Magic Fight. [...]

The lineup is stocked with a veritable dream lineup for fans of the local independent music scene, with Mikal Cronin and Shannon and the Clams headlining and support from Kelley Stoltz, Golden Void, French Cassettes, and Magic Fight. The Bay Brewed Artist Q&A: Magic Fight on ukuleles, beer, and post-breakup recording

The Bay Brewed, San Francisco’s only indie rock beer festival, returns on December 7 at Public Works for a third year of great music and beer. Over the next month, we'll catch up with all six of the festival's superb local bands to discuss how beer, music, and the Bay Area all fit together. In this edition, we chat with Oakland's Magic Fight, a group led by singer and ukulele player Alex Christopher Haager that creates shimmering indie rock with an arresting edge. The Bay Bridged: How do you think your ukulele playing fits into Magic Fight's sound? Alex Haager: It’s like the smallest [...]

The Bay Brewed 2013: Mikal Cronin, Shannon and the Clams to headline our rock and roll beer festival!

On December 7, 2013, SF's only indie rock beer festival, The Bay Brewed, returns to Public Works for a third year of great music and beer. We're now pleased to announce the festival's lineup six amazing local rock bands, led by Mikal Cronin and Shannon and the Clams. Both acts have had banner 2013s, releasing two of our favorite albums, MCII and Dreams in the Rat House, and they're both consistently great live performers. While you're enjoying all of the excellent music, you'll be enjoying unlimited tastings from over a dozen local breweries all day long thanks to the SF [...]

Album Premiere: Magic Fight – 'Wooden Swords and Stolen Echos' (release show tonight at El Rio)

Oakland's Magic Fight has already shared two tracks from their debut album Wooden Swords and Stolen Echos, and we're happy to premiere the full album here on The Bay Bridged today. Overall, the album takes on much darker themes than the first two singles, "Fangs" and "Legs", but songwriter Alex Christopher Haager has a talented ear for harmonies and melodies that he uses throughout, even in those gloomier moments. Magic Fight plays a release show tonight at El Rio, and has another gig late next month at Amnesia with Kids on a Crime Spree and Teenage Sweater. Listen to Wooden [...]

Magic Fight – "Fangs"

Oakland's Magic Fight just released the single "Fangs" from their forthcoming debut album entitled Wooden Swords & Stolen Echoes. The band began as a recording project for lead singer, ukelele player, and Florida native Alex Christopher Haager, who describes the band as "four guitar players playing anything but guitars." "Fangs" is a pop song at heart, but its big bass, sweeping harmonies that surprise you right away, and just a hint of a dark side make the track stand out. Magic Fight will be at Brick & Mortar along with The Disposition and the The Lawlands March 14, and they [...]
