Backseat Beat, Episode 7: Magic Bullets Backseat Beat is a video series highlighting indie musicians and the city by the Bay. Armed with Flip cameras, we interview bands in the back seat of our ‘83 Volvo as we spirit them away to unexpected, forgotten corners of San Francisco, where they plug in outdoors to play a few tunes. Each band’s performance transforms these urban spots from their anonymous day to day existence into surreal, magical backdrops. When it sometimes feels like every other band in our fair foggy town is doing their best to mine obscure 60s garage nuggets in a bald attempt to please [...]

Best of 2010: Dawson Ludwig on Magic Bullets

Magic Bullets - "Lying Around" Magic Bullets are the type of songwriters that make me uncomfortably jealous. They have a discipline that I could never have in life. They know how to pace a three-minute song and turn it into an original gem of pop art. On their new self-titled album, there is only one track that narrowly breaks the 4-minute mark. This suggests a quiet confidence in their song construction – no need to play that chorus one more time - the listener gets it. No need to repeat that refrain – that would ruin it. They get in, [...]

Magic Bullets (Podcast #218)

Magic Bullets (Podcast #218) This week's podcast showcases San Francisco's Magic Bullets, whose second full length album, Magic Bullets, came out yesterday on Mon Amie Records. The band's first record, a CHILD but in life yet a DOCTOR in love, came out in 2007, and introduced a refreshingly catchy jangle pop sound calling to mind bands like The Smiths, The Feelies, Talking Heads, and Orange Juice. Over the next several years, the Bullets focused on writing and recording, gaining an EP, but losing two band members to Girls. That setback aside, the Bullets are now back and, yes, they sound [...]

This second full-length comes after surviving major lineup changes, and yet the Bullets sound as vibrant as ever. Magic Bullets - "Lying Around" Magic Bullets' record release show will land on July 4th in a most appropriate environment: Part Time Punks at The Echo in Los Angeles. Their summer tour dates include shows [...]

Magic Bullets “Lying Around” on new 7″

The last full-length release from Magic Bullets (feature podcast) may have been in 2007, and it may have featured a long tumultuous name (a CHILD but in life yet a DOCTOR in love). This does not mean that the band is incapable of releasing a more straightforward second album, and more than likely, it will be full of more sweeping indie pop gems. Magic Bullets - "Lying Around" Magic Bullet's next full-length will be a self-titled effort, out in June via Mon Amie Records. To help promote the album, the band has released the first single as a 7", entitled "Lying [...]
