Phono Del Sol: Madeline Kenney can’t sit still

Words by Annie Bacon “I once dreamt my own death,” Madeline Kenney tells me over tea at Black Spring Coffee in Oakland. “I fell off a really tall ladder and was falling and falling and falling and I was like, ‘OK, I’m going to die now.’ And then when I woke up I was like, ‘Oh my God, I just accepted my own death.’” Accepting her own death is just one of an impressively eclectic set of talents Kenney possesses, not least of which is the exciting new voice she brings to the Bay Area music scene. At once evocative [...]

Madeline Kenney founds Copper Mouth Records

"I don’t want it to be over-glorified, if that makes sense. This is a new thing for me, like a 2017 experiment. I really hope it goes well, and I’ll need the artists to help me and teach me the whole time," Madeline Kenney says about embarking on Copper Mouth Records. "With what's going on in the world — this week has terrified me so much — we need to keep making art; it's the most important thing to me." Madeline Kenney is a musician who lives in Oakland. The Bay Bridged Band-To-Band Relay: First Edition

Words by Annie Bacon In this age of oversaturation, musical curators are so important to those who need help sorting the wheat from the chaff. Algorithms chime in on this quest as Spotify and other services attempt to pinpoint our musical desires through playlists, but individual curators become important through their work in magazines, online media. As part of The Bay Bridged’s ongoing desire to curate and deepen your awareness of your local music scene, we have created the Band-To-Band Relay. Each month we’ll start off with a single local artist, write about why we like them, and then ask [...]

Premiere: From our new fundraiser compilation, Madeline Kenney and Jay Som team up for “Always Around Me”

Through our work, The Bay Bridged provides critical exposure for local artists, but we can only continue to do this with your support of our 2016 fundraising campaign. With any donation of $10 or more during the fundraiser, you'll get a copy of our new 2016 Fundraiser Compilation, which features rare and unreleased songs from our favorite San Francisco Bay Area musicians, including Mike Blankenship, China, Patrick Clos (of Cocktails), and more. Today, we're pleased to premiere the first song from the new compilation, "Always Around Me," from two of our favorite emerging local musicians, Madeline Kenney and Jay Som. [...]

Madeline Kenney covers Arthur Russell for non•market comp

Man, has it really just been a year since we first told you about Madeline Kenney? She's released a steady stream of material since then, and each release seems to bring more depth and confidence from Kenney. Her latest track is an Arthur Russell cover for the second non•market compilation. Kenney bravely tackled Russell's "That's Us/Wild Combination," replacing some of the funkiness of the original with with a sense of distant wanting, while also executing some glorious harmonies and rounds. Kid Trails, Lalin of The Seshen, Perhapsy, and There's Talk also appear on the comp, which you can order here. [...]
