LA Bridged: Panache Booking’s Village of Love benefit celebrates intersections of activism and LA music

Entrance at Village of Love, February 14, 2017 It's 9:00, exactly 50 minutes after I lapped the Teragram Ballroom for the first time. Nearly an hour and exactly $13 later, I finally approach the show I've circled the streets of LA to see, and perhaps unlike exorbitant parking fees near downtown, I know the money being raised at tonight's Panache Booking Village of Love Valentine's Day extravaganza is going to a good cause: Planned Parenthood. Something about the venue felt cavernous, and after wandering through a dark hallway, I ended up at the stage, where my valentine for the evening was [...]

Second Mac DeMarco Show added at Great American Music Hall

Everyone's favorite gap-toothed indie rock British-Canadian persona, Mac DeMarco, has added a second date at the Great American Music Hall on July 8. Unsurprisingly, DeMarco's July 9 show date sold out faster than you can say "Vernor Winfield McBriare Smith IV" (DeMarco's real name) or "gap-toothed indie rock British-Canadian persona". After releasing Rock and Roll Night Club and 2, both in 2012 on Captured Tracks, this year saw the release of Salad Days--and DeMarco's arrival as indie rock's newest, weirdest, wunderkind (see photo). Salad Days doesn't fall far from the tree that grew DeMarco's first two LPs. Lots more of [...]

The festival is sold out, and with good reason: the lineup offers everything from Paul McCartney and Nine Inch Nails to King Tuff and local bands like [...]

Review & Photos: Mac DeMarco, Trails and Ways, Cocktails, Calvin Love @ Rickshaw Stop, 4/3/13

The scene at Rickshaw Stop on Wednesday night was much different than on September 14, 2012, the first time Mac DeMarco headlined the venue. Last year's Friday night gathering attracted around one-hundred people, half of which were there to see Stockton's Surf Club. Last night was a whole different story. The crowd steadily filled into the sold out venue starting when Calvin Love took the stage at 8:20, until 11:30 when DeMarco exited. Local bands Cocktails and Trails and Ways filled in the middle sets. DeMarco had noticeably cut his hair and changed his clothes since a delightfully delirious set [...]

Mac DeMarco playing three times in SF this week

Mac DeMarco will be bringing his faded guitar flares to San Francisco next week. Upon dropping 2, the full-length follow-up to the Rock and Roll Night Club EP, DeMarco received critical acclaim for the album's lyrical depth and jangly guitar-pop.  DeMarco's dreamy voice sings of the kind of discontent and boredom only known to suburban teenagers (we were all there at some point--this writer included), and his lyrics show that he knows all too well the ups-and-downs of being an insightful kid trying to make sense of the whole damn world. Where 2 pops are songs with unforgettable guitar riffs, [...]

Review: Mac DeMarco and Surf Club @ Rickshaw Stop, 9/14/12

The few who attended last Friday's show at Rickshaw Stop were treated to a wild night of danceable indie rock and hilarious stage banter from Mac DeMarco and Surf Club, despite an unfortunate cancellation from Melted Toys due to trouble with the band's tour van. With empty set times to fill, Justin Vallesteros of Craft Spells played a long DJ set of all the latest grooves. Surf Club took the stage at 10:30pm, performing for the first time since new guitarist Marcos Gonzalez joined the band this year. The Stockton-based shoegaze outfit—formed by vocalist and guitar player Frankie Soto (a [...]

Live This Month: September 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #286)

Live This Month: September 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #286) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. September is overflowing with compelling live music choices -- so many so, in fact, that a bunch of significant concerts didn't make the podcast. Of the picks that did make the cut, however, our top pick is our fifth annual Rock Make Street Festival, which brings 70 arts and crafts vendors and twelve local bands to 18th Street and [...]
