M. Lockwood Porter comes home for the holidays

It's a Thanksgiving miracle: Former Berkeleyite M. Lockwood Porter is coming home. Briefly, that is. Recently relocated back to California after a brief jaunt to his home state of Oklahoma, Porter is embarking on a short West Coast tour next weekend that will take him up to Oregon and down to LA. In the middle, he's stopping off at San Francisco (and Boulder Creek the next night for all you South Bay-ers) to play with Vandella and his pal John Calvin Abney. Give our old friend a warm welcome at El Rio on the 23rd. Porter released the reliably excellent [...]

M. Lockwood Porter to debut new work at Rickshaw Stop

(photo: Robert Alleyne) It's been a while since we heard from M. Lockwood Porter. Emerging from an eight-month semi-hiatus, Porter and his full band will be appearing at Rickshaw Stop next month to test-drive some new material. The show is also being filmed for reasons, we assume, will be made clear at a later date. For those who don't already know, Porter's long been a favorite of Bay Bridged staff. Starting with rousing, rootsy numbers in his earlier work, he really impressed us with the Springsteenian calls-to-arms on 2016's How To Dream Again. Who knows what turn in sound this [...]

Bands In Portrait: M Lockwood Porter

“If you look at Bernie Sanders or Donald Trump, you see two groups of people who are obviously angry about where we’re at and trying to make massive change,” says Max Lockwood Porter (known professionally as M. Lockwood Porter) as we discuss his album a few weeks after the 45th president of the United States is elected. How To Dream Again is a bold and ambitious album which chooses to tackle the current political landscape in all its glorious deformity and contradiction. The Oklahoma-raised singer, who now lives in Berkeley, has a crisp, gravelly voice that bears witness to contemplations [...]

Win tickets to our Giving Tuesday event tomorrow night!

Now that you've done all the taking (of turkey, mashed potatoes, and pie), get ready for the giving. Tomorrow night, we have a sweet event going on at Standard Deviant that will help us raise funds for the coming year. The Bay Bridged is a nonprofit that promotes independent music and arts in the Bay Area. Through our blog, podcasts, and flagship event Phono Del Sol, our mission is to provide the critical space and exposure for local artists to really shine. But our scene can't exist without some audience participation — and that's why we're calling on you to [...]

Photos: M. Lockwood Porter at Neck of the Woods

M. Lockwood Porter (photo: Robert Alleyne) Last Sunday night, November 13, 2016, Berkeley resident M. Lockwood Porter played to an intimate crowd at Neck of the Woods. It was a somber performance and a powerful one at that, with songs like "Charleston" now sounding eerily prophetic.  Opening act Anna Tival told some great stories to accompany her songs, and Justin Farren took requests for some songs that he usually didn't perform. It was a great night for those in attendance, and our own Robert Alleyne was there to photograph the excellent selection of images below for your enjoyment. (Editor's Note: M. Lockwood Porter is [...]
