Bundle up with August Hall for fall

You know...we were all prepared to write an intro to this piece that capitalized on the changing fall weather. About leaves softly descending from trees, about digging your scarves and closed-toed shoes out from the back of your closet, about the return of Karl. ...Except that's not what's happening at all. Temperatures that are typical for summer in every other part of the country finally found their way to the Bay a few weeks ago. It was 100+ degrees in some parts of the Bay this week, and if the last few years are any indication, it'll be like this [...]

Lucy Dacus announces North American headlining tour

Lucy Dacus has just announced tour dates for 2019 and we’re pleased as pie. The pure-voiced folk singer has also just released a single, “My Mother and I,” and it’s a nice taste off her new album titled 2019. The collection is a combination of original Dacus songs and originally reimagined covers. Each track is tied in some way to a holiday, which is an interesting album theme and one we’re diggin’ on. “My Mother and I,” for example, is connected to Mother’s Day with raw honesty, bashing away cliches. With similar careers and lives, the three artists intended to co-write three songs. This led to more songs, then an LP release, and now a tour. These artists’ performances are deeply personal. Julien Baker, the original headliner, signed to Matador Records for her second [...]

Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus are the women of boygenius who outsmarted them all

(Photo: Lera Pentelute) Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus booked a tour together before they formed the new indie rock band boygenius. It’s not the typical order of events, but that’s the genius of this trio. They are not bound by convention, nor do they hang on the word of “adult men” in the industry. These artists — all singers, songwriters, and guitarists under the age of 25 — were driven by their calling to make music together. Undeterred, they made it happen on their own terms. Each young woman has a fairly new and successful solo career, a [...]

The sheer number of options blanketing the Texas capital during the festival can be overwhelming, but it remains one of the premier places to discover new and emerging bands. That's the view from a music fan's perspective, mind you. For a musician, the degree to which South by Southwest performances might [...]
