Noise Pop Photos & Review: Debuting a new album, La Sera charms the Rickshaw Stop

La Sera (photo: Jon Ching) La Sera's Music For Listening To Music To arrives next week, but Wednesday night's show at the Rickshaw Stop was the group's de facto record release party, debuting songs from the new album in a stellar set. If it was no longer fair to call La Sera "bedroom pop" or "surf pop" by 2014's Hour of the Dawn, the duo's new album makes the point doubly clear. They are now wholly a rock and roll band, seamlessly incorporating elements of punk, twang, and pop as each song requires. Even more notably, La Sera is now officialy [...]

Giants party! with King Tuff and La Sera at Great American Music Hall

Wednesday night, the Giants took the World Series as we crossed the Bay Bridge, and all was quiet. We passed AT&T Park, nothing... Driving up 9th street, that all changed. Baseball capped crowds streaming out of bars from every direction, screaming, chanting, fists in the air. Frightening really. Parking near Mitchell Brothers offered a small sense of security that our car would not be flipped over. Cheap fireworks blasting in all directions we hugged the row of empty shops and slid a block down to the Great American Music Hall. The Great American is our most glorious music venue. What [...]

Summer's here, which means that bands are hitting the road in droves and new albums are coming out fast and furious. That's great news for local music fans, but it also means that July is the sort of month where tough choices abound. On Saturday, July 5, for example, you could check out The Fresh & Onlys, whose House of Spirits shows the band continuing to [...]

Phono del Sol Preview: La Sera, a different side of Vivian Girls’ Katy Goodman

Does girly rock get you going? Do your eyes light up at the sound of crooner Alexis Krauss on Sleigh Bells' "Infinity Guitars," or the smooth sadness of Bethany Cosentino on Best Coast's "Boyfriend"? Maybe you've only dabbled in the genre, and just heard that one great Vivian Girls song that all your friends listened to, or that was on that one mixtape your college roommate made you after you moved out. You're not quite sure if you're an expert on it, but you know you like it. Hard core girl jams make you happy, and you want to know [...]

La Sera, Cold Showers, and Swiftumz play Rickshaw Stop on Wednesday, 3/7/12

One-third of the Vivian Girls, Katy Goodman will headline a show at the Rickshaw Stop Wednesday night as La Sera, supported by L.A.’s Cold Showers and San Francisco’s loveable and cuddly brat, Swiftumz. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUM2kZkXLi4 On La Sera's sophomore release, due later this month on Hardly Art, Goodman has stripped away a few of the layers found on her solo project's self-titled debut for a more polished finish. Still very much a pop record, all the surfy punch remains on Sees the Light, but the vocals are prominent and -- gasp! -- are clear, not buried under dense reverb. The music [...]

Live This Month: March 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #274)

Live This Month: March 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #274) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. The annual insanity of South by Southwest means that a ton of artists are touring right now, and plenty of performers will be in SF in March en route to or returning from Austin. But while most of the acts included in this episode will be doing one or a dozen shows in bars and parking lots around the [...]

Video: La Sera – “Never Come Around”

Here's an appropriately creepy/charming new video for Halloween, courtesy of La Sera, the latest project from Vivian Girl Katy Goodman. I was hoping that the video would help me resolve a few questions about some of the song's lyrics, but I got distracted by all the stabbing and killing. La Sera - "Never Come Around" La Sera will be at the Hemlock Tavern on Wednesday, 11/3 (9pm, $7), with Wax Idols and No Joy.
