KUSF-in-Exile's Blown-Out, Blowout Benefit II, 3/29/13

Still on the hunt for a place to call home, the old Save KUSF (soon to be known as San Francisco Community Radio) crew is hosting another show to raise money for legal fees associated with their fight to get KUSF back on regular airwaves. Held at The Lab, the show will feature Carlton Melton, Oakland’s Disappearing People and Yogurt Brain, along with DJ Irwin and The Mixed Bag. Admission is $5-10, followed by those two little words we love the most: sliding scale. Until the show, check out a video from Carlton Melton’s recent tour below and take a [...]

Thursday Night: KUSF Benefit at Milk; KUSF in Exile streaming online

The SHE'S - "Surfer Boys" If you are a little cynical, you might have expected the Save KUSF movement to start out with a lot of outrage that would gradually dissipate as people moved on and got distracted by other things. Admirably, that hasn't been the case, and KUSF DJs and supporters have continued the fight in the courts and in the public arena. You can find out more about the legal battle in this detailed article at Radio Survivor. On the public front, DJ AmperDan is throwing a KUSF fundraiser show this Thursday at Milk (8pm, $10), featuring The [...]

Effort to save KUSF at critical fundraising moment

Photo by Bobby Castro The USF administration may have framed the sale of KUSF's 90.3fm as a done deal, but the community of dedicated DJs, listeners and supporters continues to fight to save the beloved Bay Area institution. Friends of KUSF tells me that this week marks a critical stage in their efforts. In addition to the generous outpouring of donations since the sale announcement, Friends of KUSF needs to raise $2,000 more by week's end to pay for legal fees to combat the sale. You can donate to help Friends of KUSF fight to save the station by clicking [...]

Discuss: Does indie music have a place on the radio?

This week's Bay Area radio shakeup saw KUSF's 90.3fm signal sold to classical station KDFC in a shady deal that paid the University of San Francisco $3.75 million to pull the plug on SF's legendary community-oriented radio station, which had been on the air since 1977. KUSF will apparently still survive online, but given USF President Stephen A. Privett's remark that the station "was of minimal benefit to my students," one suspects it won't be the same if/when it returns. Without KUSF, San Francisco has lost its only above-ground freeform music station, and a major supporter of local independent music. [...]
