Review: Kimya Dawson calms at Rickshaw Stop

I needed to sit down. I got there late because I had just been at Clusterfest all day. I had wanted to finally see Wizard Apprentice live, but I only caught the end. Though the ending of their set was spectacular, almost felt I was like entering while everyone at Rickshaw Stop was watching a sci-fi film, and that just made me want to see them more. I got to sit down. During Kimya Dawson’s set, the whole crowd sat down, though many of us were not prepared. I knew it was a possibility, but yet I couldn’t find a [...]

Kimya Dawson surprises fans with a pair of Bay Area shows

Kimya Dawson is reemerging and giving the people what they want: more chances to sing along and make merry the sinister realities of today's political and social landscape across two shows this weekend; one in Santa Cruz and one in San Francisco. Following the devastating Oakland fire last December, Dawson scrambled together several artists for a benefit and healing event in Oakland - her first performance since pop-up and intimate show from June of that year. This weekend she is pulling double duty, and hopefully that will spell more opportunities to catch Dawson in the near future. On Friday, June [...]

A bunch of great shows tonight: Times New Viking/Spencey Dude, Michael Yonkers/The Sandwitches, Aesop Rock/Kimya Dawson

On a busy week like this one, it can be (and was) difficult to whittle down our list of preferred shows to just four for Recommended. For instance, in addition to all of that other great stuff this week that we mentioned yesterday, there are no fewer than three great shows tonight, Tuesday, June 14th. As Kevin from Positive Destruction flagged yesterday in the comments, the new Times New Viking album is something special. The band's first record on Merge, it's plenty fuzzy but with some real strong skewed-pop bursting through. King Tuff and Spencey Dude and the Doodles (who [...]

Noise Pop Review: Kimya Dawson, Aesop Rock 2/25/11

Kimya Dawson and Aesop Rock know how to throw a party. Equal parts one-off take-home stage decorations, interpretive cross-dressing dance performance, turntablism, animal costumes and just a dash of space exploration. Let's back up. I have to admit that I was drawn to the Aesop Rock/Kimya Dawson collaboration for the same reasons that had Ben scratching his head at the line up, initially. What would that collaboration sound like? It sounds a lot like Aes rapping over piano and guitar melody. It also sounds like Kimya lilting over Serato scratches. The earnestness with which each wordsmith took at a stab [...]
