Photos: Kevin Morby at the Fillmore

Kevin Morby (photo: Norm deVeyra) Tireless singer-songwriter Kevin Morby has put out stellar work over five solo albums now and doesn't show any signs of stopping. His shows have a quiet intensity to them, and sometimes a not-so-quiet intensity. Last weekend he brought his band with him in support of his recently-released  album Oh My God at the Fillmore and our photographer Norm deVeyra captured the gallery below for you to check out.

Kevin Morby sings of a haunting LA on ‘City Music,’ hits GAMH in September

Former Woods bassist Kevin Morby has in recent years enjoyed widespread praise for his flourishing, prolific solo career. He’d previously played in the Babies with Cassie Ramone of Vivian Girls. The duo put out a couple of excellent albums before the project was declared inactive. Since the end of the Babies and his departure from Woods, Morby has kept busy. 2013’s Harlem River marked the start of a slew of releases: four albums in five years, all of which display nuanced songcraft and a rambling folk imagination. But it was last year’s Singing Saw that won him significant acclaim, helped along by [...]

Outside Lands: Following along to Kevin Morby’s parade

(photo: Dusdin Condren) In one of the best scenes from Bojack Horseman, the excellent Netflix comedy that a few weeks ago released its tremendous third season, the titular character lies dissatisfied in the aftermath of setting fire to his surroundings in another of his misguided attempts to find warmth. His former biographer, and now fellow lost cause Diane, responds to Bojack’s disappointment with life by asking him, “When’s the last time you were actually happy?” Subsequently, we are thrown to Bojack driving his disheveled car, eyes transfixed on the road as he heads to find the place he last remembers [...]

Rodrigo Amarante (photo: Natasha Dangond) Brazilian indie rock singer Rodrigo Amarante played to a full house at The Swedish American Hall on Wednesday, July 29, 2015, with Tim Cohen (of The Fresh & Only's) and Kevin Morby set as his opening acts.  Photographer Natasha Dangond was there to capture these intimate shots from the night's performances.

Noise Pop 2015: Jessica Pratt, Kevin Morby charm at The Chapel

At this point, "otherworldly" is probably an overused adjective to describe a singer's voice, but I'll be damned if it doesn't nail Jessica Pratt's uniquely captivating way with a melody. Joined by a single guitarist at The Chapel on Wednesday night, the duo's intricate folk was simply stunning. The set flew by far too quickly, with "Moon Dude" and "Back, Baby," both from her new album, On Your Own Love Again, standing out as two of many highlights. But if the beauty in her voice and her music felt slightly alien, the singer-songwriter was gracious and charming, remarking about how [...]

Tonight! Kevin Morby, Mall Walk, The Younger Lovers at 1-2-3-4 Go! Records

A few months ago Oakland's raddest record shop expanded their store to nearly twice its original size, and substantially increased their vinyl selection. Tonight, if you can tear yourself away from thumbing through the 7-inches, you should wander into 1-2-3-4 Go! Records' backroom where Kevin Morby, Mall Walk, and The Younger Lovers will all play very intimate sets. Kevin Morby looks shockingly young if you've only listened to his music. The first time I saw him at Brick and Mortar I covertly Google Image'd him to double-check he wasn't some kid who had wandered on-stage. As the former bassist in Woods and [...]

Tim Cohen of Magic Trick and The Fresh & Onlys returns to SF

We are very stoked to announce that Tim Cohen, mastermind behind Magic Trick and The Fresh & Onlys, has moved back to San Francisco after having lived in Arizona for the past year. Though he's been away, the fuzzy pop connoisseur has remained a constant presence in our scene with 2013 releases from both of his bands: The Onlys' Soothsayer EP and Magic Trick's River of Souls LP. Cohen will be making his homecoming performance as a reinstated resident of the Bay this Saturday, February 22, with Magic Trick at the Chapel. If you haven't allowed yourself the chance to get into this [...]

Kevin Morby (Woods, The Babies) playing free solo show in SF

Fans of Kevin Morby, rejoice! Morby will be playing a FREE show at the Brick & Mortar Music Hall on February 4th as part of Wood Shoppe's astoundingly FREE monthly shows. Rounding out the lineup is L.A.'s psych-popper Avid Dancer, Fine Points (side project of Sleepy Sun) and a DJ set by Zachary Carl-Os of Wood Shoppe. Did I mention it's free? As a Brooklynite, Morby started out playing bass for Woods and then formed The Babies, who I've always found more redeeming for the perfect musical partnership with Cassie Ramone of Vivian Girls. And then, proving he's not one [...]
