Editors' Picks: What We've Been Listening to This Week (Phono del Sol Edition)

Phono del Sol 2013 takes place tomorrow, July 13, at Potrero del Sol Park. Get your tickets now! Jason: We've been all over K.Flay in the run up to Phono del Sol, most recently with our boy Roman Gohkman's interview with the talented Ms. Flaherty herself. Her new EP What If It Is is due August 6, and we've already shown you the video for the album track "The Cops". But as much as I love that song, there's another track off the album that I've had on repeat much of this week – K.Flay's collaboration with Detroit rapper Danny [...]

Interview: K.Flay is between homes but busier than ever

Chicago born and raised, Stanford-educated and Brooklyn-based rapper K.Flay is homeless. It’s a temporary predicament, but less than two years after moving to New York to pursue her career with RCA Records, 27-year-old Kristine Flaherty finds herself on the road through the end of September, touring in support of her latest EP, What If It Is (to be released in August). The September stretch of dates, opening for dance duo Icona Pop, will be the rapper’s largest shows to-date. “My lease was up, so I actually don’t live anywhere, technically,” Flaherty said. “I live in a storage unit in Yonkers. [...]

K.Flay releasing 'What If It Is' EP, to tour with Icona Pop

K.Flay is ramping up for busy summer, announcing recently that she will be releasing an EP titled What If It Is August 6 on RCA Records and that she will be touring in support of Swedish duo Icona Pop during their North American Iconic Tour. The new record should prove to be more of what we've come to expect from this unique female hip-hop act, who mixes elements of electronica and rock into her brash sound along with her knack for sharp-witted rhymes that concentrate of themes of disillusionment and indifference in an age of heightened technological reliance and consumerism. Live This Month: October 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #289)

Live This Month: October 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #289) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. Live music in the Bay Area in October means two big local music festivals in Hardly Strictly Bluegrass and Treasure Island, but smaller indoor temptations abound all month long. Chris Cohen has a resume full of involvement in great bands, including Deerhoof and Cryptacize, but his new solo album is an intimate work that ranks as one of this [...]

Interview: K.Flay on balancing hip hop and electronica, Brooklyn and SF

There is a duality to San Francisco rapper K. Flay. There’s Kristine Flaherty, who graduated from Stanford with majors in psychology and sociology, and the hip hop artist who signed with RCA Records. There’s a 26-year-old woman who identifies with San Francisco, yet moved to Brooklyn last year to further her career. And then there’s the artist who straddles the tightrope between hip hop and electronica. Since her move to New York, K.Flay released an EP (Eyes Shut), toured nonstop and began to record a debut album, which she hopes to release in early 2013. She relishes each chance to [...]

Brooklyn, by way of San Francisco, rapper and producer K. Flay has released her second EP entitled Eyes Shut, and she is giving it away for free via Spin. Eyes Shut combines the perfect mix of hip-hop/electronic beats topped with Flay's sharp and smooth lyrical flow. K. Interview: K. Flay discusses the Bay Area music scene and what inspires her to make music

K. Flay is a San Francisco-based, genre-blind producer/songwriter who is making her name beyond the City by the Bay. K. Flay is the nom de plume of Kristine Flaherty, who started making music a few years back while attending Stanford. Known for rocking the stage, she has opened for several big name artists (Ludacris, Snoop, toured with Passion Pit), and although she hasn’t released a full-length album yet, you can download a couple of insane mixtapes on her website. K. Flay also happens to be a gifted remixer (her take on Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci” is my favorite remix of the [...]
