Mixtape: New Folk Music from the Bay Area
This episode first ran on KQED.org. Download: Mixtape: New Folk Music from the Bay Area (Podcast #423) In venues around the Bay Area, like The Lost Church, Neck of the Woods, and the Octopus Literary Salon, Bay Area musicians are sharing new and exciting folk songs, emotive compositions full of lyrical storytelling and thoughtful instrumentation. The stories shared by local folk artists are often personal, like Diana Gameros' new album interpreting Mexican songs from her youth, or Joseph Childress's LP drawing from his travels around the western United States. Marissa Kay was inspired to write the first song and title [...]
Celebrate the release of Joseph Childress’s self-titled LP
Photo: Michael Bordelon Last month, Joseph Childress released his first full-length album in a long time, his self titled LP on local favorites Empty Cellar Records. Childress' most recent release before this one was the vinyl release of Rebirth, a lo-fi collection of songs he recorded in his parents' bathroom and originally released on CD-R. Joseph Childress is an entirely different experience; professionally recorded in Portland by Mike Coykendall, the new album is crystal clear, introducing new layers of folk instrumentation without losing the intimacy that is so crucial to Childress' work. Listen below and purchase via Empty Cellar. Joseph [...]

Modern Man, Joseph Childress playing the Knockout
Oscar and Felix. Walt and Jesse. Dipping your French fries in a Frosty. We love odd couples. In the spirit of strange pairings, we have a musical odd couple for you: Two of our favorites, Modern Man and Joseph Childress, are teaming up for a night at The Knockout. Modern Man, who moved here from South Carolina last year, are an immersive shade of psych that will take you to corners of your brain you've never been before. Childress, on the other hand, is a steel-stringed nod to dusty roads and a time when peoples' hands were a little more [...]
Tim Cohen of Magic Trick and The Fresh & Onlys returns to SF
We are very stoked to announce that Tim Cohen, mastermind behind Magic Trick and The Fresh & Onlys, has moved back to San Francisco after having lived in Arizona for the past year. Though he's been away, the fuzzy pop connoisseur has remained a constant presence in our scene with 2013 releases from both of his bands: The Onlys' Soothsayer EP and Magic Trick's River of Souls LP. Cohen will be making his homecoming performance as a reinstated resident of the Bay this Saturday, February 22, with Magic Trick at the Chapel. If you haven't allowed yourself the chance to get into this [...]

Mixtape: Thirteen Bay Area Highlights from 2013 (Podcast #322)
http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/2013_Highlights_Mix.mp3 Download: Mixtape: Thirteen Bay Area Highlights from 2013 (Podcast #322) As usual, our year-end wrap-up podcast comes leaden with hemming, hawing and caveats aplenty. How can another wide-ranging year full of impressive Bay Area releases be distilled down to a coherent list of "best" works? The obvious answer is that it can't. Ultimately, this podcast collects thirteen bands that had impressive 2013s, including a number of groups that won't be a surprise to attendees of Bay Bridged events or close followers of the blog. 2013 was once again banner year for local garage rock, with another stellar album from [...]
Editors' Picks: What We've Been Listening to This Week (MINKS, Joseph Childress, Jacques Greene, Daughter)
Minks (Photo: DM Harrington) Ben: I spent a significant period of time in traffic last weekend failing to identify which '80s or '90s British band it is that MINKS seems to be emulating on Tides End. Brooklynite Sean Kilfoyle's latest LP has a classic feel -- sleek, nimble indie pop -- but he ultimately avoids being pegged as "the new" anybody. That's a good thing too, because the songs are winners, especially "Painted Indian", which I have found myself circling back to a lot lately -- there's something about the way the chorus is phrased that is pure [...]
Joseph Childress releases "Whispering Tide"
Photo: Darren Race Two weeks ago, we brought you news of Joseph Childress’ forthcoming new album, The Rebirths. This week, the San Francisco singer-songwriter released the first single from Rebirths, “Whispering Tide,” which was co-premiered with with Raven Sings the Blues and Ad Hoc FM on Thursday. You can listen to the song below. It’s got Childress’ characteristic hint of dissonance and, though I'm hesitant to say it, is even a little Dylanesque. The Rebirths will be out in both vinyl and digital form on August 20th on Empty Cellar Records.
Joseph Childress to release 'The Rebirths' on Empty Cellar, 8/20/13
Photo: Darren Race After several years of only playing live and releasing a handful of singles over, San Francisco's Joseph Childress is set to release his first proper LP later this summer on Empty Cellar Records. Arvel Hernandez from Empty Cellar tells me the label was actually created specifically to release music from Childress, and they receive more inquiries about his work than any artist on their roster. The Rebirths will be the first of three Childress records that Empty Cellar will release over the next year and a half. The Rebirths was originally recorded sometime around 2005 after Childress [...]
