Giveaway: Jonathan Richman at the Chapel

First time I saw Jonathan Richman was at Burger Boogaloo in Oakland in 2015. The first thing he did was make sure that he didn't have to stand on stage, because he has never wants to be put on a pedestal. It was packed, but he tried his hardest to make everyone feel safe and included, and I feel like that is his legacy. A musical legend that actually cares about his fans and the people he surrounds himself with. He's also freaking talented, and is a legend because of his music alone. The Modern Lovers was created because of his [...]

Review: Jonathan Richman @ Make-Out Room, 8/15/13

For the last night of his four-night residency at the Make-Out Room, Jonathan Richman wasted no time perfecting THE SOUND. He asked politely and waited patiently for the giant fan to be turned off. It might mean heat stroke, even death, but he wanted THE SOUND to be perfect...and so it was. It was super fucking hot in the Make-Out Room, but when JoJo played a reconfigured version of "Old World," no one was complaining. He strummed those chords better than I've ever heard those chords strummed (at least since the song's birth on the seminal The Modern Lovers LP [...]

Jonathan Richman: upcoming Make-Out Room residency

Indie elder statesman Jonathan Richman returns to the Make-Out Room next week for a four night residency from the 20th through the 23rd (all shows 8pm, $15). Jonathan and drummer Tommy Larkins recently produced singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt's upcoming album, Skitter On Take-Off, out October 6th. Richman and Larkins are expected to return to the studio soon to record the follow-up to 2008's Because Her Beauty Is Raw and Wild, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Jonathan Richman - "Time Has Gone By So Fast" (from Because Her Beauty Is Raw and Wild) In the meantime, Richman picked a collection of [...]
