Making new funk is difficult - it was done so exquisitely years ago, and most attempts to recreate that magic in modern times falls flat. Luckily, Joe Bagale started with his deep, soulful voice and created funk that doesn't try to recreate the past, utilizing analog synths and samples to create something entirely new. Joe Bagale, OONA, The Thrill of It All @ Independent Friday

Among the standard mix of indie rock concerts taking place this weekend (save for the many local players at this year's SxSW), a soul-infused evening featuring Oakland musicians is scheduled to take place on Friday at the Independent (9:00 pm, $12/advance, $14/door). Joe Bagale, a young local with an old soul, will showcase his retro R&B-influenced pop and smooth, jazzy compositions. The multi-instrumentalist has most often performed in traditional jazz atmospheres, but will change things up on Friday by headlining a more indie-influenced lineup.
