Jazz Mafia's “Future Standard” (photo: Jon Bauer) Jazz Mafia’s “Future Standard” explores the world of current pop music through the lens of the jazz musician. This tradition of reshaping popular songs goes back as far as the roots of jazz: A popular song gets reimagined by musicians outside of the pop genre (in this case, incorporating improvisation), which then gets recorded, sampled, and incorporated into the next generation of pop music...and a cycle is born. Here's what it was like for our photographer Jon to experience Jazz Mafia's Cosa Nostra Strings' new "Pod Patio" series, performed in a backyard in Oakland and livestreamed to YouTube. The sold-out crowd was treated to an hour of this "musical experiment" masterpiece that was made in the '40s and '50s by jazz greats like Miles Davis, Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan, and John Lewis. Theis provided his own thoughts on his personal musical discovery and journey with this masterpiece of classic be-bop. Ticket Giveaway: Jazz Mafia’s Brass, Bows and Beats @ Yoshi’s Sunday

This Sunday, April 25th, Yoshi's in San Francisco will host Jazz Mafia's Brass, Bows and Beats, a local hip-hop symphony. The 45-piece collective have found success since their 2009 Bay Area premiere, selling out seven shows and now gearing up for a North American tour in 2010. The above video is a 10-minute clip compiled from footage of last year's shows.
