Giveaway: Japandroids at the Independent

Canadian rock band Japandroids, consisting of Brian King and David Prowse, are making their way to the Bay next week to perform at the Independent. Since their debut album nine years ago, the duo have built a name for themselves. They released their latest album Near to the Wild Heart of Life in early 2017 and lucky for us, they're still on the road promoting their music. They've been going around making stops in some of the biggest cities, and their tour will eventually finish near the end of July. But best you catch them now rather than later! That's [...]

Review + Photos: Japandroids at the Fillmore

Japandroids (photo: Estefany Gonzalez) A little over thirty minutes into their sold out show at The Fillmore, Vancouver-based rock duo Japandroids paused their energetic set to reminiscence with the audience. “This song goes out to the Hemlock—does that place still exists?” Lead singer and guitarist Brian King asked and the crowd cheered, confirming that the Hemlock hasn’t yet fallen prey to gentrification. “Awesome, this song is called 'Younger Us' and it goes out to anyone at our early shows at the Hemlock.” Almost all of Japandroids' discography traffics in simplistic, twenty-something, nostalgia, which makes “Younger Us” about as perfect of a [...]

Japandroids announce worldwide tour, stop at The Fillmore in March

In 2012, Japandroids — an uproarious, life-affirming guitar rock duo out of Vancouver — released the best album of that year, Celebration Rock, an endearing ode to late nights, close friends, and an unwavering belief in embracing the beautiful present. After touring for two solid years behind that release, the band suddenly disappeared. Nothing was heard from guitarist Brian King and drummer David Prowse, and rumors abounded that the duo — who have famously expressed their struggles with songwriting — were content to fade into retirement, leaving their project behind on an relentlessly satisfying high point. During the band’s extended [...]

Review: The 2013 Treasure Island Music Festival

This year's Treasure Island Music Festival attracted a diverse crowd, most of which partied way too hard during the high-energy dance sets of Saturday to attend Sunday's more guitar-oriented lineup. Sunday was also much colder, with lines for coffee often stretching beyond lines for beer. Schools of glowing white jellyfish drifted through the festival grounds on handheld sticks, as music fans wandered back and forth between the two stages. Giraffage kicked things off at noon during Saturday's stretch of the festival after an introduction from Noise Pop/Salty Artist Management's Chad Heimann aka Chad Salty, performing sample-driven dance music for the [...]

Ticket Giveaway: Japandroids & Bleached at The Fillmore, 11/12/12

Canadian wunderkinds Japandroids are coming back to the City next Monday, continuing to ride the wave of their second full-length album, June's Celebration Rock. Just nine days after that album dropped, Brian King and David Prowse played a headlining gig at The Independent (capacity: 500), but now the duo returns to the mother of all San Francisco venues, the legendary Fillmore, and its 1,200 capacity – what a difference five months can make! The fine folks at The Fillmore were generous enough to give us one pair of of tickets to Japandroids' show (which features L.A.'s Bleached supporting), so one [...]

Bleached announces Fall tour dates with Japandroids, coming to The Fillmore 11/12/12

L.A.'s Bleached is hitting the road again this November, playing a leg of dates throughout the western U.S. in support of garage rock's newly-minted superstars Japandroids. The recently announced tour will see the Clavin sisters opening for Vancouver's finest on November 12th at the Fillmore—a venue with more than twice the capacity of the Independent, where Japandroids played as recently as June. Bleached's star continues to rise, with their lo-fi, dirty bubblegum rock sound and the sisters' history as members of now-defunct Mika Miko garnering them a fair share of press clippings and tours with the likes of DIIV and [...]

Review & Photos: Japandroids, Cadence Weapon @ The Independent, 6/14/12

There was a fleeting moment Thursday night — about two songs into Japandroid’s sold-out set — when I began to worry that the cavernous belly of the Independent might prove too big and distant for the band’s intimate, exuberant call-and-response rock music. We were packed to capacity and yet a very real stiffness hung in the air. I couldn’t help but think of the recent controversy-stoking New York Times article warning that tech yuppies might destroy the middle class in San Francisco. Where was the hop-and-shoulder bumping mosh pit? Are there no fucking kids left in this city? And then [...]
