Where the Devil Makes Three make hyper-driven, fingerpickin' country, frontman Pete Bernhard's solo music treads a little differently. Lighter orchestral qualities mix with Bernhard's traditional ragtime style, coming together to create an endearing mix of classic Americana. His second record, Straight Line, is out now via Milan Records. A new instrumental project has popped up here in the Bay, and making debuts in less traditional ways. Islay Banks, comprised of members of Jake Mann & the Upper Hand and Sholi, are set to release their debut cassette (that's right, CASSETTE - time to break out the old decks you've kept around for these just-in-case scenarios) via Beehouse Records this spring. Between his last album Daytime Ghost and his next release, Jake Mann has been releasing the "Sediment Series" of EPs, "Compiled ideas, musical tangents...the good stuff that didn't make it onto an 'official' release." While the first two have been limited edition CDrs, Jake's giving away the new Valdez EP, featuring three new songs and a reworked "Our 1st Assumptions Were Correct" (from Daytime Ghost). Pesticide Watch, a fantastic local nonprofit dedicated to "[helping] citizen groups across California develop sustainable solutions for dealing with pests, instead of using toxic pesticides" is holding a great fundraiser tomorrow (Thursday, April 2) evening at Space Gallery in SF.
