TBB Premiere: SF’s Jake Mann & The Upper Hand serve up rocking new single “Days Are Long”

Not but a few days ago, in beginning the process of preparing some end-of-2010 recap materials, I was remarking to another Bay Bridger that for all of the great music coming out of the Bay Area right now, it feels like we're in something of a drought on the straight-up indie rock front. Don't get me wrong, the Bay's got plenty of creative folks engaging in synthy experimentations, folk weirdness, and raw garage rock, but where is the meat-and-potatoes Pavement/Spoon-style indie rock and roll? As if to answer that question, Jake Mann & The Upper Hand recently sent us "Days [...]

Pete Bernhard (DM3), Jake Mann, Leopold @ Cafe du Nord 2/21

Where the Devil Makes Three make hyper-driven, fingerpickin' country, frontman Pete Bernhard's solo music treads a little differently. Lighter orchestral qualities mix with Bernhard's traditional ragtime style, coming together to create an endearing mix of classic Americana. His second record, Straight Line, is out now via Milan Records. Pete Bernhard - "Warning" Spending most of the past couple of years touring with DM3, Bernhard is set to play Cafe du Nord this Sunday, February 21st (8 pm, $10, 21+). Opening the show will be local favorites Leopold and His Fiction and Jake Mann and the Upper Hand. [...]

Islay Banks remixes Jake Mann & the Upper Hand, performance Saturday

A new instrumental project has popped up here in the Bay, and making debuts in less traditional ways. Islay Banks, comprised of members of Jake Mann & the Upper Hand and Sholi, are set to release their debut cassette (that's right, CASSETTE - time to break out the old decks you've kept around for these just-in-case scenarios) via Beehouse Records this spring. To kick things off, Islay Banks have remixed Jake Mann & the Upper Hand's "Signal Reprise," pulling indie rock into a darker territory that's full of drone and eerie instrumental swells. Islay Banks will participate in "The Listening [...]

Jake Mann gives away the Valdez EP

Between his last album Daytime Ghost and his next release, Jake Mann has been releasing the "Sediment Series" of EPs, "Compiled ideas, musical tangents...the good stuff that didn't make it onto an 'official' release." While the first two have been limited edition CDrs, Jake's giving away the new Valdez EP, featuring three new songs and a reworked "Our 1st Assumptions Were Correct" (from Daytime Ghost). Mann and band The Upper Hand (Aaron Bellamy on guitar and trumpet; Dan Baber on drums, percussion, and vocals) recorded the tracks with Max Hart (We Are Scientists, High Speed Scene) as they plot out [...]

Quality uncompromised: Sholi at BotH

Words by: Nicole L. Browner Photos by: Adrian Bischoff Whereas many of the Noise Pop shows offered headlining spots to the big out-of-town bands, this Bottom of the Hill show allowed San Francisco to boast its local talent on the rise: Sholi's Noise Pop performance doubled as their at-home record release party for the album they've released on Quarterstick last month. Opening for the night was their longtime associate, Jake Mann (Crossbill Records) and friends. Jake bashfully draws upon classic sounds from the decade before: the eager tempo of Pavement, Jeff Tweedy's rural charm and even a little Neutral Milk [...]
