Hungry Skinny to headline Bottom of the Hill Saturday night

Hungry Skinny is headlining one slam-bang lineup at Bottom of the Hill Saturday night. In addition to Skinny's old-school groove rock vibe, like if the southern-fried nasty jams of Black Oak Arkansas were reinterpreted for millennials in the 21st century, the bill also features the dance punch of The Lower 48 who are celebrating a record release that evening. A sneak peek of upcoming track "Hot Fool" is included below, its tight rhythm section bolstering the enticing vocal melody, possessing both '80s new wave cool and a modern-day pop sheen. Opening things up is LA-based Mars and The Massacre, a [...]

Live This Month: November 2015 — an audio guide to upcoming SF concerts Download: Live This Month: November 2015 (Podcast #374) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. This month's episode features a wide variety of local and touring bands, with sounds ranging from the rollicking garage-punk of Timmy's Organism and the lo-fi dream-pop of Toner to electronic compositions by Oneohtrix Point Never and Made of Oak (the solo project of Nick Sanborn of Sylvan Esso). On the out-of-town front, Los Angeles is surprisingly well-represented, with songs from Morgan Delt (performing at the Oakland [...]

Check out Strange Hotel’s new single, “Tightrope”

Photo by Maciej Makalowski San Francisco-based rockers Strange Hotel have new single out, one that veers in a slightly different direction from their previously established sound. Don't freak — they still rock. It's not like they woke up one morning and decided to go folk, ditching guitars for banjos and drums for a washboard. Consider it an interesting tweak rather than an excessive overhaul. The song is called "Tightrope" and it's a more atmospheric offering from the four-piece, resembling new wave psychedelia more than the old-school vibe they channeled on their eponymous LP. It's a laid-back, slow-burning, tom-driven [...]

Get weird at Love City Horror Show on Thursday

2014 has been a great year for the mini festival. The fire in the underground -- the same one that fueled Ocean Beach Music and Arts Festival, Not Dead Yet Fest, and Hickey Fest, and the very same one that powers The Bay Bridged -- has always been there, burning steadily into the night. It has been overshadowed at times, in this city more than others, by forces more affluent but less tenacious than rock and roll, but with the help of these small, locally curated festivals, it burns on. The latest log in the fire is this week's Love City Horror Show. Organized by Love.City founder [...]

Get to Know: Hungry Skinny

San Francisco rock 'n' roll outfit Hungry Skinny has dropped a steady stream of releases over the last three years, including two singles in 2014 alone. Members Garrett Riley (vocals/guitar), Sean Russo (vocals/bass), Remy Vale (guitar), and Ty Thorpe (drums) craft a funk-infused blues sound that points to both early blues rock inspirations (Blind Faith, Cream, Allman Brothers) and more recent alternative influences (Blind Melon, Red Hot Chili Peppers). Listen to Hungry Skinny's two 2014 singles, "Nasty Sunshine" and "Git Along" complete with B-sides below, and then get details (and a peek at the show poster) for the band's upcoming [...]
