Howlin Rain to celebrate new Rick Rubin-produced album at The Independent on 2/18/12

Howlin Rain is set to drop their new LP, The Russian Wilds, on Valentine's Day, February 14. The album was produced by Rick Rubin. If you don't know who Rick Rubin is, he's the dude with the beard in the "99 Problems" video. Howlin Rain will be tearing through The Independent on February 18 to celebrate the new release. The Soft White Sixties and Zodiac Death Valley also play. You can check out "Phantom in the Valley",  the first single from The Russian Wilds, below. Make sure you stick around until about the 4:10 mark for the epic Latin jam [...]

Live This Month: February 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #270)

Live This Month: February 2012 (Podcast #270) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. The twentieth installment of the Noise Pop Music Festival takes over a wide variety of local venues later this month -- and we'll be covering many of those shows -- but there are also plenty of pre-NP events worth checking out. Locally, two bands are seeing the release of records for which it feels like we've been waiting forever: the debut LP from ultra-catchy punks Terry Malts, and [...]

As we discuss on the podcast, with four great local bands on the bill -- Little Wings, Royal Baths, White Cloud, and Sea of Bees -- as well as DJs, local artists, and more, it's a really special event, and we hope to see you there. Howlin’ Rain @ The Uptown

Howlin' Rain plays in their local downtown at the Uptown on Saturday (9pm, $10) with Radio Moscow and Matt Baldwin (PA). Fans of front-man Ethan Miller's Neo-Psyche band Comets on Fire know that Howlin' Rain is a different beast. More focused and melodic than CoF, Howlin' Rain pares down the melodies into complex but pop-sensible tunes that try to connect the listener to the art without alienating them in the intricacies that CoF is known for. After a long span away due to a world tour and supporting Queens of the Stone Age, this will be their first Bay Area [...]
