Is the San Francisco music scene dead? We search for clues.

Hot Flash Heat Wave at the Rickshaw Stop, January 31, 2016 I recently heard the music scene in San Francisco was dead, and being a writer for a website dedicated to covering the music scene in San Francisco, I was obviously a little concerned. To get to the bottom of this, I went out to find some comments from some members on the scene. But man, it was kind of difficult. I thought I'd start with Chuck Prophet, who at this point should be considered one of the deans of the SF scene (if it still exists). Unfortunately, [...]

Photos and thanks from our 10th Anniversary Party at the Rickshaw Stop!

We knew that our tenth anniversary party would be a night to remember, but that was one hell of a show! With great performances by Hot Flash Heat Wave, John Vanderslice, Annie Girl & the Flight, and Everyone is Dirty, who generously agreed to fill in for the ailing The Stone Foxes only a few hours before the show. A heartfelt thank you to all of the bands, to DJ Danny Gloverrr, and to the great staff at the Rickshaw Stop. We'd also like to thank Magnolia Photo Booth Co., Jolt 'n Bolt Bakery & Café for delicious pastries, and [...]

Checking in with Hot Flash Heat Wave

Photo credit: Luke Lasley Hot Flash Heat Wave remind me of sweets. Specifically the sweets Theibaud has been painting since the sixties. There's a degree of play at hand in the band's sound and the painter's paintings — tactile and sugary. They're animate via their breeziness. What I like most about Hot Flash Heat Wave are the moments their shininess is contextualized with something a little colder, more piercing. I'm thinking about the part two minutes into "Hesitation," and the way guitar slices clean through the otherwise glassy song. Or how the chorus in "Tastes Good" feels like the pleading, sadder maturation to [...]

The Bay on Bowie: Bay Area bands memorialize the iconic cultural hero

Our beloved Starman has passed on, and as the news has sunk deep into our hearts and minds, we at The Bay Bridged are giving a space for some of our favorite local bands and musicians to dedicate their David Bowie tributes, however they wish to honor him. The consensus, if we could ever come to one? It's quite hard to distill years of Bowie memories into words; many had their sexual awakenings to Bowie's package in Labyrinth; and so many parts of his body of work had a profound impact on people. Read their poignant words below. Derek Barber, Perhapsy/Bells [...]
