This episode first appeared on KQED.org. http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/Festivals_2017_Mixtape.mp3 Download: Mixtape: Northern California's Best Music Festivals (Podcast #407) Music festival season unofficially kicked off over Memorial Day weekend, with the latest installment of the BottleRock Napa Valley festival attracting 120,000 attendees for three days of food, wine, and over 80 bands ranging from the Foo Fighters to the Napa Youth Symphony. The number and types of music fests has grown considerably in recent years -- among this year's new offerings are not one, but two new music and comedy weekends coming to the Bay in June -- surely to the dismay of [...]
Best of 2015: Will Butler of Social Work on Hickey Fest
Hickey Fest painting by Emily Schumaker It was the summer solstice and the wind was blowing in our hair on the way up Highway 101 — mostly because Maddie’s car window had just been smashed out in a Walgreen’s parking lot in West Oakland. They had snatched Derek’s backpack, and guitar pedals too — pretty inconvenient considering his upcoming set with Bells Atlas was one of the main attractions of the weekend. There wasn’t much we could do though; I dug through the garage for an extra delay pedal and we were off to Hickey Fest, a literal wide spot [...]
We All Together Presents the third annual Hickey Fest
Spring is about to give way to summer, and that means it's time for California's music communities to head north to Leggett, CA for the third annual Hickey Fest. Held at the Peg House in Standish Hickey State Park, the three-day campout brings together two things that are essential to the soul: nature and music. Sweet, sweet music. It all goes down the weekend of the Summer Solstice -- June 19, 20 and 21 -- some of the longest days of the year. Utilize those extra hours of sunlight by lounging at the mouth of the Eel River with stellar 25 bands, [...]

Text by Zack Frederick In 2014, there’s been more controversy about the gentrification of San Francisco than any other city in America. Similarly, anyone who looks beyond the success of well-known Bay Area festivals like Outside Lands will find an emotional debate about the city’s ability to foster a healthy, independent music scene rumbling just below the surface. And yet, mid-to-small sized, do-it-yourself festivals continue to flourish in SF and the larger Bay Area. While mega-festivals enjoy lucrative corporate [...]

Held at Standish Hickey State Park (from which it takes its name), Hickey Fest features three days of music and over 30 bands, including Allah-Las, Sonny and the Sunsets, Chris [...]
Hickey Fest: 3 days of music and camping in Mendocino County over Memorial Day weekend
It's festival season in California, and one of the most interesting I've heard of is Hickey Fest, a three-day festival curated and organized by Oakland's Ash Reiter in the woods of Mendocino County. The event features three very full days of music at The Peg House in the town of Leggett, with camping just across the road in Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area, where you can swim in the South Fork of the Eel River. Tickets are just $45 (including camping) for all three days, which is a bargain for the camping alone. The lineup is mostly Bay Area artists, and [...]
