Mixtape: New Alternative — The Bay Area’s emerging noisy rock sound

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/Alternative_Rock_Mixtape.mp3 Download: New Alternative: The Bay Area's emerging noisy rock sound (Podcast #390) The post first ran on KQED.org. The dream of the '90s may be, as the TV show says, alive in Portland, but the sounds of the '90s are finding new vitality in the San Francisco Bay Area indie music scene. In recent years, a significant number of new bands have emerged citing alt-rock leaders like Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine, and the grunge scene as inspiration for their noisy indie rock. The stellar local label Father/Daughter Records has released a number of albums by local alternative-inspired [...]

Happy Diving release singles ahead of LP, announce tour

(Happy Diving. photo: AV Club) Birthed in the suburbs of the East Bay but now distributed across the West Coast, Happy Diving turned heads in 2014, releasing a self-titled EP and their debut LP, Big World, a 10-song, unapologetic tribute to guitar rock, using fuzz and big leads to maximum effect, aligning themselves with similarly minded acts such as California X. Since then the group have toured sparingly, but are returning this summer with their sophomore LP, following a 7" release on Topshelf Records. Entitled Electric Soul Unity, the first two singles show the band picking up right where they left off. The [...]

Happy Diving release “So Bunted” and record EP

This song is the combined feeling of resignation, frustration and exhaustion that immediately follows the exchange 'how are you?' 'good, and you?' 'good.' Which is by no means a ding – the song booms. Happy Diving's “So Bunted” is just over two minutes, a loud and succinct sentence, ramped up with bounce and the constant threat (or tease, depending who you are) of feedback. This is the first of two songs on the So Bunted 7” EP, and their first release on Topshelf Records out July 17. Like your all-time favorite suburb, the song is pent up and warm, it [...]

Mixtape: 2014 San Francisco Bay Area Musical Highlights

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/2014_Highlights_Mix.mp3 Download: Mixtape: 2014 San Francisco Bay Area Musical Highlights (Podcast #353) In 2014, Bay Area artists released a wealth of great records, with highlights coming in an array of genres: garage pop, indie rock, electronic pop, and hip hop. The year brought new acclaim to ascendant locals like tUnE-yArDs and Tycho, the latter of whom just released a deluxe version of his stellar 2014 album, Awake. Also on the rise are The Family Crest, who grabbed well-deserved NPR attention for the band's sophomore LP, Beneath the Brine. It was a year of impressive debuts: Cathedrals built a strong following [...]

December’s Featured Album: Happy Diving – Big World

Here are two things I learned about Happy Diving, whose new album, Big World, is our featured album on The Bay Bridged for December. First, the East Bay band only formed about a year ago, which is crazy when you consider how well-defined the band's sound is. Anyone looking to define a new trend in Bay Area music should take note of all of the killer noisy pop that's been showing up lately, including Terry Malts, Tony Molina, and now Happy Diving, who invigorate slack, anthemic indie rock with a punk intensity. Second thing I learned: Big World was somehow [...]

Any month that offers a free weekend of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park and two days of great bands at the Treasure Island Music Festival is bound to be good. Father/Daughter announces Happy Diving – ‘Big World’

It’s more or less amusing that many of the members of the East Bay’s Happy Diving have yet to reach the legal drinking age. Even more so is the fact that they’ve only been a band since 2013. And yet, despite the brevity of their existence in the Bay Area music scene, they’ve done nothing but produce satisfying and energetic pop songs. Breaking out with their self-titled EP in 2013, the band is following up with a full length album entitled Big World out October 21 via Father/Daughter Records. The EP, which is currently available digitally and on cassette from Father/Daughter, was [...]
