Premiere: Listen to the somber pop of Guy Fox’s ‘Paper Roads’ EP

Guy Fox is one of those bands that somehow never disappoints. Over the course of their careers here in the Bay, the band has cultivated a distinctive, accessible sound defined by strong distinctive rhythms and overall good vibes. (Look back at our first coverage of the band in 2012 here.) On Paper Roads, the band continues their expert use of rhythm. Throw on some good headphones to get the full effect of the sonic experience - on every track, nearly all the instruments transform into additional percussion and every little note seems to have a distinct purpose. Recorded at Tiny [...]

Q&A: Six bands John Vanderslice is listening to right now

Longtime friend of The Bay Bridged John Vanderslice is a busy guy these days. His new recording studio Tiny Telephone Oakland opened this month, and its SF counterpart continues to be a destination for indie artists. Vanderslice has also been producing albums like Into It. Over It's forthcoming Standards, which arrives in March. Oh, and he's also a stellar singer-songwriter is in own right, who will be performing at our 10th anniversary party this Saturday night at the Rickshaw Stop alongside The Stone Foxes, Annie Girl & The Flight, and Hot Flash Heat Wave. Before Saturday's show, we asked John [...]

Guy Fox set to release ‘Night Owl’

Oakland's Guy Fox has steadily been releasing individual tracks and EP's for several years now, but they're finally set to release their debut full-length LP Night Owl August 22. The band has come a long way since we first wrote about them nearly three years ago. On Night Owl, they retain their fun dance party vibe, but they've grown as musicians and expanded sonically. Night Owl was recorded entirely at Tiny Telephone with James Riotto, and they describe it as "truly a studio record". That's perhaps most evident on the track "Antique Furniture", which is kicked off with synths punctuated [...]

Bandcamp’s first City Guide spotlights Oakland: Bells Atlas, Waterstrider, Kid Trails, and more

Recently, Oakland's music scene has been raking in the national press. In February, it was Fantastic Negrito delivering the winning video for NPR's Tiny Desk Concert contest filmed inside of a freight train: "behind a desk made of a steel slab and a work bench, this soulful character won our hearts" was Bob Boilen's praise. The winnings included a place on the bill for a SXSW showcase alongside the likes of Charles Bradley and King Tuff, and now he's slated to perform at this year's Outside Lands. Now, Bandcamp – or more specifically, content curator Andrew Jervis – has taken notice. Jervis explains, "Oakland is considered home to [...]

Oakland’s Bells Atlas headlines Rickshaw Stop

Afro-beat and hip-hop explorers Bells Atlas cannot stop moving up. Joyfully rhythmic and harmoniously diverse, the textured strangeness brings to mind Sylvan Esso or Dirty Projectors, but is still undeniably, purely unique. They're also cultivating a burgeoning music scene in the East Bay with non-market, a collective of bands (Trails and Ways, Waterstrider, The Seshen, and more) who jam together, play shows together, and put out really cool compilations together. Friday night Bells Atlas will be headlining San Francisco's Rickshaw Stop along with San Francisco indie-pop crooners Guy Fox, as well as Brass Magic who say they're influenced by "the garbage of Manhattan, [...]
