Get weird at Love City Horror Show on Thursday

2014 has been a great year for the mini festival. The fire in the underground -- the same one that fueled Ocean Beach Music and Arts Festival, Not Dead Yet Fest, and Hickey Fest, and the very same one that powers The Bay Bridged -- has always been there, burning steadily into the night. It has been overshadowed at times, in this city more than others, by forces more affluent but less tenacious than rock and roll, but with the help of these small, locally curated festivals, it burns on. Buffalo Tooth plays Commune with Commissure, Growwler

For its last San Francisco event of 2013, Commune is taking over Elbo Room tomorrow, November 13, and bringing a killer lineup to fill in the soundspace. Headlining the night will be the blues-savvy punk rockers of Buffalo Tooth, whose no-bullshit approach to music is nicely encapsulated in their most recent offering, "Shit Show," available on their limited edition Buffalo Tooth/Creepers 7" split. Also on the lineup is Commissure, an experimental rock band with an affinity for ambient bedroom tunes, and the rock/pop outfit Growwler, who won the 2013 Audience Favorite Award in San Francisco's epic Music Video Race for their "Shooter's Hill" music video. Having just returned to the Bay Area from Eugene, Oregon, Growwler is set to release an EP and video over the next couple of months. For now, check out "Burnt Sienna Brown" off their latest EP, led by front-man Davis IL's loud and twang-infused vocals. Is it country, chamber pop, southern rock, or something else? Who cares? Just enjoy it – the track is a great introduction to a band that I'm glad [...]

To kick things off, Cocktails released a sweet, original garage-rock Christmas tune, and they're playing a holiday show tonight with DSTVV and others! Details are at the bottom of the page. Fantastic bluegrass band The Parmesans actually recorded a special Christmas medley just because they heard of last week's post post (and because they are awesome). Stream or download here: The Parmesans - "Christmas Medley" A newcomer [...]
