Giveaway: Grouper at Swedish American Hall

Photo by Jason Bokros Liz Harris, the artist known musically as Grouper, has a Bay Area connection that many people don't remember. Though she's now based in the Portland, OR area, she was born in West Marin and got her Bachelors in Practice of Art at UC Berkeley. Now, she's back in the Bay for a sold-out double show at the Swedish American Hall. Harris is truly a singular, independent artist who's dedicated to her expansive career in music and art. It's a path, like her music, that's truly a living being, as evidenced by her website: Among other things, [...]

Jessica Pratt at The Chapel (Photo Credit: Jon Ching)   Got any plans for the weekend? If you're like us, you're still recovering from the week that was Noise Pop 2015, and you're not quite ready to wrap your brain another show-filled weekend. A sense of space also guides Clinic's psych-pop offering Free Reign; in fact, the group just released an alternate collection, [...]

Grouper & Ilyas Ahmed coming to the Hemlock on 5/28/13

Grouper, the ambient solo project of Portland artist Liz Harris, will make a rare live appearance with collaborator Ilyas Ahmed at the Hemlock Tavern on Tuesday, May 28. Danny Paul Grody and Irwin Swirnoff (of aQuarius recOrds) will support the intimate show. In 2011, Grouper collaborated with Ahmed on a limited edition EP called Visitor (sorry for grabbing the last copy from aQuarius – maybe, just maybe, the pair will have a couple extra copies for sale at the show), and you can hear a track off that record, above. Earlier this year, Grouper reissued her formerly out-of-print 2008 breakthrough [...]

The On Land Festival is this weekend

Please note: the flyer above is slightly incorrect, as the early show is on Saturday, not Sunday. Tarentel - "Everybody Fucks With Somebody" (from Ghetto Beats On The Surface Of The Sun) The On Land Festival takes place at Cafe Du Nord and the Swedish American Hall this weekend with three shows of psych, ambient, experimental and drone music. Curated by Root Strata, over twenty bands will be performing, including local highlights Tarentel, Barn Owl and Darwinsbitch and a performance by Portland's Grouper, whose Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill (Type 2008) was simply terrific. Grouper - [...]
