Review & Photos: Yuck 2.0 visits The Independent

Photos by Evan Henkel A band continuing without their original frontman is bold. It's gutsy and noteworthy, but something was just off on Wednesday night. I walked into The Independent with slight apprehension. I was about to see a band I had really loved upon discovering in 2011. Yuck's debut album was it three years ago--90's-inspired alt rock songs that burned slow and held an air of mystery, the self-titled release was a layered and labored-over project. Fast forward to 2013, when frontman Daniel Blumberg broke things off with the rest of the band. While Blumberg went on to tangle up [...]

GRMLN covers "Hallelujah", tours SoCal

We know you, and your mom, and your best friend, and your dog, have heard “Hallelujah” before. Many times. Maybe not the original, and maybe not the just-as-if-not-more-famous Jeff Buckley version, but, from a strictly statistical standpoint, it’s very likely you’ve heard some version of it at some time in your life. And even if you haven’t, you’re about to. Since its birth in 1976, Cohen’s haunting “Hallelujah” has been covered by freakin’ anyone and everyone, with over 300 known recorded renditions in existence. It’s the go-to “sad song” for every indie movie and cult TV show. It’s widely considered [...]

Editors' Picks: What We've Been Listening to This Week (Eleanor Friedberger, Magnetic Fields, GRMLN and more)

Deafheaven (Photo: Randi Sumner) Editors' Picks is a new feature collecting music that we've been enjoying recently. Ben: I'm normally a "the weirder the better" kind of guy, but I'm really digging Eleanor Friedberger's Personal Record. Friedberger's solo songs might sacrifice some of The Fiery Furnaces' weirdness, but her measured indie pop rewards close listening. "When I Knew" is an early highlight, with the singer-songwriter offering a series of colorfully-detailed vignettes tempered by a playful unwillingness to offer the whole story. What's more, the final one actually takes place in the Castro! Friedberger is performing at The Independent with TEEN [...]

GRMLN offers "Do You Know How It Feels?" and "Hand Pistol" for free download, full-length 'Empire' out 6/4/13

Yoodoo Park dropped the debut EP under his GRMLN moniker back in October, and now he's readying for the June 4 release of his first full-length Empire on Carpark Records. So far, Park (who jointly calls Santa Cruz and Orange County home) shared three tracks off the record, most recently offering "Do You Know How It Feels" and "Hand Pistol" as free downloads via SoundCloud. Esquire of all news outlets debuted "Do You Know How It Feels", and British blog This Is Fake DIY premiered "Hand Pistol", with both noting the major '90s influences bubbling up GRMLN's new material. The [...]

Stream GRMLN's debut EP 'Explore'

Santa Cruz' Yoodoo Park (aka GRMLN) just dropped his debut EP Explore, which we first told you about back in September. The album was initially streamed exclusively by Santa Monica's KCRW, but Park recently made it available via his label Carpark Record's SoundCloud page. Explore features seven pop tracks that paint striking soundscapes reminiscent of the surf town that Park presently calls home (he was born in Japan and raised in SoCal). Bright and open tracks like opener "Relax Yourself (Dolphin Cry)" and "Wedding" bleed into the jangly guitars and plodding bass of the likes of "Depressions" and the album's [...]

GRMLN releases "Coral" in anticipation of forthcoming EP

Born in Kyoto, Japan, raised in SoCal, and currently a student at UC Santa Cruz, 19-year-old Yoodoo Park operates in the music world under the moniker GRMLN. He is set to release his debut EP Explore on October 23rd, 2012 via Carpark Records and recently dropped the album's first single over on Fader, a guitar-driven-yet-dreamy track entitled "Coral". Park began recording what would become Explore two years ago in his garage in an effort to provide a soundtrack for his numerous road trips while surfing off California beaches. He took much inspiration from his natural, coastal surroundings and explores themes [...]
