King Khan, King Lollipop and other royalty: 1-2-3-4 GO! Anniversary Fest 7/23/11 (night 2)

Sneaky Pinks Night 2 began with Elvis Christ. A supergroup of sorts, but I couldn't tell ya who's who. There may be a connection to the great Uzi Rash that opened yesterday's bash. Elvis Christ King Lollipop Then the first King appeared! King Lollipop came with a complete set of drumming minstrels. Shannon (of the Clams) played some fine cowbell. Hunx (of the Punx) banged away. The King stood alone on the other side of the stage lookin' as usual like Mortimer Mouse (astutely pointed out by Shannon in a recent TBB interview). It's getting harder to find a YouTube [...]

Rachel Fannan, Outlaw, Greg Ashley, White Manna at Elbo Room 1/19/11

I could barely get out of bed. South Park had me in the zone. Cartman's hand was Jennifer Lopez. Then I thought about KUSF (90.3) and how I hadn't sent them enough money over the years. Now one of my favorite college radio stations is an unending torture of classical music. I thought about Greg Ashley, another local treasure, and how I was late to his last show. I put on my pants. Outside there was a gigantic full moon as I sped across the Bay Bridge to the Mission. Rachel Fannan was playing when I arrived. She recently parted [...]

Greg Ashley – Requiem Mass and Other Experiments

Greg Ashley - "Requiem Mass - Part I" Oakland studio wizard Greg Ashley just released his latest album on Birdman Records, and it's something of a curve ball after two solo records of psych-folk-pop. Side A of Requiem Mass and Other Experiments is, true to the album's title, an electric requiem mass in four parts featuring contributions from a lengthy supporting cast of talented players. Side B is billed as "a series of sound and music experiments," which Ashley has described in terms like "this fucked-up pulse," "a wall of shit" and "a mess of instruments stumbling around," descriptions that [...]

Review: Greg Ashley, The Wolf, Mad Rivers, Nectarine Pie + more @ Ghost Town 5/7

The Ghost Town split itself open for May's First Friday to expose 7 of the bands that call this gallery home. Like some visible man anatomy model of my youth, the mysterious innards were slowly revealed. Brain: I arrived to find long time resident, recording guru and Gris Gris mastermind Greg Ashley playing where the beer machine used to be. Sadly I missed the first few songs, but the ones I did hear were the highlight of the night. His latest lineup included upright piano, upright bass, and sax plus Ashley on guitar. The music is all instrumental and a [...]

Noise Pop 2010: Citay, Scout Niblett, Greg Ashley, Tape Deck Mountain @ Cafe du Nord

Photos by: Nicole Browner Tape Deck Mountain - "Scantrons" As I walked up Market Street to Cafe du Nord, I could hear these brooding tunes emanating from underground and couldn't help but think how perfectly the music of Tape Deck Mountain fit with the almost vampiric ambiance of du Nord's crimson-soaked lighting and walls. While it was the brooding tunes I heard on my way in, TDM switched things up a bit in their set, playing a few tracks off their Scantrons 7". Things really got kicked up a notch for these songs and showed the brilliance of [...]

KALX 45th Anniversary Party Review: Greg Ashley, Social Studies, Sugar and Gold, and Chow Nasty (Full Review)

Chow Nasty We're pleased to welcome our newest contributor Lizz Fay to The Bay Bridged. You may also know Lizz as a member of the very excellent The Ian Fays, who we featured earlier this year. A couple weeks ago, Lizz attended the KALX 45th Anniversary fundraiser concert and contributed this report on the night's events. Public transportation is an amazing thing. Unfortunately, every once in while you find yourself arriving a little too late to a show and missing a band. When I did arrive at the Rickshaw Stop for KALX's 45th anniversary celebration on Thursday, November 8th, the [...]
