How can another wide-ranging year full of impressive Bay Area releases be distilled down to a coherent list of "best" works? The obvious answer is that it can't. Ultimately, this podcast collects thirteen bands that had impressive 2013s, including a number of groups that won't be a surprise to attendees of Bay Bridged events or close followers of the blog. 2013 was once again banner year for local garage rock, with another stellar album from [...]

Review: The 2013 Treasure Island Music Festival

This year's Treasure Island Music Festival attracted a diverse crowd, most of which partied way too hard during the high-energy dance sets of Saturday to attend Sunday's more guitar-oriented lineup. Sunday was also much colder, with lines for coffee often stretching beyond lines for beer. Schools of glowing white jellyfish drifted through the festival grounds on handheld sticks, as music fans wandered back and forth between the two stages. Giraffage kicked things off at noon during Saturday's stretch of the festival after an introduction from Noise Pop/Salty Artist Management's Chad Heimann aka Chad Salty, performing sample-driven dance music for the [...]

Mixtape: Bay Area Artists, Remixing and Remixed (Podcast #304)

Mixtape: Bay Area Artists, Remixing and Remixed (Podcast #304) All too frequently, remixes are just okay, but when they are great, they're really something special. A truly great remix can shed new light on the original artist's work and stand on its own as a unique creation. That's no easy feat, either, given the tension between staying true to an original song's components and a reworker's desire to create something new and personal. These days, it feels far too easy to get remix fatigue. Reworkings seem to pop up almost immediately after original songs are released, and they can come [...]
