Ghost & The City offer wholesome soul on “N.W.T.A”

(photo: Sean Martens) Before immersing oneself in the vastly ambient "N.W.T.A" off Ghost & The City's Time, one should note that this is only the band's second effort. Kia Fay, Will Jenkins, and Ash Maynor create a lush bouquet of complementary textures with a composure that long outmeasures their time as a band. The Oakland trio's sophomore EP, which received production treatment from Eki Ahara, will be self-released March 30. Including the brass stylings of Ross Eustsis, the work is a full-bodied taste of electronic soul that is sure to please. https://open.spotify.com/track/3ouzvLTq46zASkHcrW6JbA?si=jSI7Y4DBSfWnB_dyY4cueA Taking part in the upcoming Noise Pop Festival, [...]

OIM presents Zakiya Harris at the Starline Social Club (enter to win tickets!)

I think it's pretty clear at this point that Oaktown Indie Mayhem is one of the best things to happen to the Bay Area music scene. Their taste in local artists is impeccable, and the roster of musicians on their record label is about as killer as the Murderers' Row lineup of the '27 Yankees (Whiskerman and Foxtails Brigade are, respectively, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in this analogy). OIM also presents some truly special shows as well, and Thursday's bill at the Starline in Oakland is no exception. It's an evening featuring the sultry grooves and cosmic poetry of [...]

Get to Know: Ghost & The City

Oakland-based Ghost & The City has reinterpreted soul for the digital age. Incorporating elements of electronica, R&B, hip-hop, jazz, and various subgenre offshoots, the project combines spacey grooves and atmospheric arrangements with genuine human emotions to move you the same way that Otis Redding and Irma Thomas and Ann Peebles did so many years ago without the aid of technical wizardry. Ghost & The City astutely understands that feeling can't be replicated by a machine alone, and uses electro embellishments to expand their soundscapes, not replace the human element. Their new six-song EP Patchwork Soul is set to drop January [...]

Mixtape: The Orchestral Side of San Francisco Indie Rock (Podcast #317)

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/Chamber_Rock_Mix.mp3 Download: Mixtape: The Orchestral Side of San Francisco Indie Rock (Podcast #317) Guitars and drums may make up the core of indie rock, but a considerable number of Bay Area artists also use instruments more traditionally associated with an orchestra than a rock band. Adding strings, horns or woodwinds might seem pretentious to some -- and, admittedly, genre names like "chamber rock" and "orchestral pop" probably don't help that assessment -- but, when used deftly, these instruments can heighten a song's emotion, add weight to dynamic shifts, and provide layers of texture that generate wonderfully unexpected moments. String and [...]
